A Report On The Remote Consecutive Interpreting For A Cultural Lecture Under The Guidance Of Interpretive Theory

Based on the immeasurable impact of COVID-19 on the interpretation industry,the combination of remote consecutive interpreting and cultural exchanges promises to be a new trend.In October 2022,a graduate student majoring in MTCSOL at Guangxi Normal University gave a cultural lecture in a remote format with an audience of intercultural backgrounds,and an interpreter was required to make Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.In this report,the author chooses Interpretive Theory as the guiding theory for the report’s analysis.First,the speaker tends to output large chunks of information in the lecture.In some complex and long sentences,several words or phrases are juxtaposed to express the same meaning repeatedly or modify the same subject.Thus,based on the first stage of the triangular model of the theory,namely,the understanding stage,the author has to fully understand the meaning of the speech before conveying the concise message to the audience.Second,the speaker did not just read slides that incorporated emotions about the culture of her hometown during the presentation,not only sharing cultural stories but also introducing Sichuan culture in the context of her experiences.When interpreting these contents,the author should go beyond the framework of language and grasp the primary meaning and central idea,that is,the stage of detachment from the source language shell in the triangular model.Finally,the speech needs to be more cohesive due to the lack of a fixed script when the speaker conducts the lecture.In this case,the author needs to reorganize the sentences and re-express the source language according to the actual situation,which is the re-expression stage of the triangular model.Guided by the theory,this report analyses deficiencies and causes encountered in the interpretation,integrated three interpreting strategies: restructuring,generalization,and omission,intending to explore the application of the Interpretive Theory in interpreting analysis as well as provide a reference for fledgling interpreters in culture or similar remote consecutive interpreting.
