The research is an interdisciplinary study of Beijing opera films, aiming to provide more perspectives for the study of the translation and dissemination of Chinese opera. It has been proved that opera translation going abroad under the current environment needs more interdisciplinary perspectives, which help various disciplines learn from each other and integrate with each other.Taking examples from Farewell My Concubine: the Beijing Opera, this research firstly classifies the involved modality into visual modality and auditory modality. It will elucidate the intermodal relations from three forms: image-text interaction,sound-text interaction, and image-sound-text interaction. The first type includes static images and dynamic actions, the second type includes two tunes Xi Pi and Prelude, and the third type includes dialogue and monologue.Secondly, the research attempts to analyze the features of interactional meaning in different modalities and the intermodal relations among them based on theories in multimodal discourse analysis.Thirdly, through the comparative analysis of various interaction types, the research also explores the meaning loss of interactions in subtitles with some suggestions on Beijing opera translation practice. The research finds that image reinforces text in image-text interaction, features of various singing and tunes diminishes in target text in sound-text interaction, and subtitle in target text prefers expressing the meaning of the original text rather than its form in image-sound-text interaction. In a word, due to time and space constraints, translators must ensure that information in subtitle is coherent enough to ensure that the viewer gets sufficient information with the least amount of effort. The reductive form of translation is often used in subtitling translation to represent the multimodal interactional menaing of Beijing opera films, which has great implications for promoting Chinese culture “Going Global”.
