A Report On The Translation Of Chapter 11 And 12 Of The Routledge Handbook Of Forensic Linguistics

The Routledge Handbook of Forensic Linguistics is a collection of academic works on forensic linguistics,consisting of 43 chapters.In this translation report,the translator selects chapters 11 and 12 as the source texts.Through case analysis,the two chapters respectively demonstrate the application of forensic linguistics in online identity assumption and question construction in courtroom interaction,which are of great significance to the application and interdisciplinary development of forensic linguistics in China.In the report,the translator notices the frequent use of dashes in the source text.Dashes divide the original complete sentence into two or more clauses,leading to semantic incoherence,thus misleading readers’ understanding,and also bringing great challenges to translators.According to the three ways of expanding clauses proposed by Halliday:elaboration,extension and enhancement,the translator,classifies the functions of the dashes,analyzes the examples,and summarizes the translating strategies to deal with the dashes,that is,"zero conversion"(to maintain the dashes),ellipsis and transformation into other punctuation marks.
