| The Digital News Report 2021,released by the Reuters Institute at the Oxford University, focuses on the impact of Coronavirus on news consumption and on the economic prospects for publishers. The COVID-19 pandemic in past two years has put further pressure on the business models of many traditional media. The report presents new findings and trends in the context of the pandemic, such as the spread of disinformation and the rise of visual social networks, and highlights the value and importance of news organizations to provide trustworthy news. This translation report excerpts from the five chapters of the second section of the report, which mainly cover the public perceptions of fairness in news reporting, interpretation of impartiality, analysis of audience value for local news, public perceptions of commercial news media financing and the ways and reasons of people consuming news on social media. In the translation process, the translator encountered difficulties from the translation of dashes in the source text. Therefore, under the guidance of Halliday’s conjunction system of cohesion theory, the translator classified the examples based on his three types of logico-semantic relations, namely elaboration, extension and enhancement.By comparing the examples and analyzing proper methods of translation,16 representative cases were chosen for the analysis in the report. The translator found that methods like retention, deletion and replacement were mostly used in this translation practice, and the cohesive functions of dashes and context should also be taken into account. The report aims to summarize the translation methods of dashes based on cohesive functions and provide some ideas for the Chinese translation practice of dashes in media industry reports. |
