Many translation theorists both at home and from abroad have been applying text linguistics to translation studies since 1990 s.Thus a new research angle of translation studies has been provided.“Cohesion theory”,the core of text linguistics, has gained a lot of attention from linguists and translators, among whom Halliday and Hasan have made the greatest contribution to it.In English Cohesion, these two British scholars divide the cohesion ties into two kinds: grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. The former one consists of four kinds of cohesion ties: reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction;while the latter one includes two kinds of cohesion ties: reiteration and collocation. There are differences between English and Chinese in terms of cohesion ties for the different historical background, geographical factors, thinking patterns and other elements in East and West. And the methods to conduct textual cohesion ties in translation will no doubt have a direct influence on the translation quality. Therefore, every translator shall cultivate the thought of cohesion and apply cohesion theory in translation practice. The source text of this report is Culture Crash: The killing of the creative class written by Scott Timberg.Based on the cohesion theory of Halliday and Hasan, this report will analyze how to handle the cohesion issues by combining the theory with practical examples. There are five chapters in this report. The first chapter is an introduction, concerning research purposes, reasons of selection,source-text contents and features. The second chapter expounds translation preparation, translation process and proofreading. The third chapter provides a theoretical foundation, introducing cohesion theory of Halliday and Hasan. The fourth chapter attempts to realize the main research purpose of this report with specific case analysis. And the last chapter is the conclusion.Furthermore, due to the high-frequency of dash using in this book and the cohesive function of punctuation, the discussion of how to deal with dash has been arranged in chapter four.
