| Translation study is closely connected with multimedia in the digital era,characterized by cross-disciplines and multimodalities.The source text of this translation report is selected from Music and Translation: New Mediations in the Digital age,which was written by Lucile Desblache.The book was published in 2019,and now it has not been translated into Chinese.The author is a professor of Translation and Transcultural Studies at the University of Roehampton,London.From 2003 to 2018,she served as the general editor of Jo STrans.The sixth chapter of this book introduces different types of music,including live performance,radio,digital music,and video games,but also proposes methods and strategies for vocal music translation,providing a brand-new translation perspective for translators.The source text involves a variety of modes of music,and with rigorous language,rich content,and explicit logic,it belongs to the academic text.According to Verschueren,using language consists of the continuous making of linguistic choices,which is featured by variability,negotiability,and adaptability.As with all communication activities,translation is a process in which the translator is supposed to make continuous linguistic choices to adapt to the target readers.It is important to note that appropriate translation strategies and methods should be used in this process.Guided by the Adaptation Theory,this translation report shows a specific case analysis from two perspectives: contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability.The translator mainly uses translation strategies including domestication and foreignization and methods such as zero,literal,and free translation.Firstly,at the level of contextual correlates of adaptability,this report explores the semantic representation of multimodal source text in terms of communicative and linguistic contexts as dimensions.The communicative context is discussed around the physical world,the mental world and the social world,while the linguistic context is focused on contextual cohesion,and appropriate cohesion devices are adopted according to the expression habits of the target language.In the translation process,multimodality,as a contextual factor,not only has semantic representation that requires careful consideration,but it also has the role of enriching the original context.As a result,the translator inserts new modes,including image,text and website link,into the TT to help readers better understand the source text.Secondly,at the level of structural objects of adaptability,the translator analyzes the original text in terms of lexical and syntactic aspects.In terms of lexical meaning,the translator strives to translate accurately specific musical terms with the help of network terminology platforms and professional books.Translation skills like splitting,adjustment,conversion,addition,and ellipsis are used for long and complex English sentences.In addition,a large number of passive sentences appear in the source text,which the translator takes as a vital sentence pattern.This translation report consists of five chapters.The first chapter is the translation task,including basic information,text selection,and report structure.Chapter two describes the translation process,which is divided into three:pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation.The third chapter is an overview of the Adaptation Theory and the semantic representation of multimodal texts,serving as the theoretical basis for the translation practice.The fourth chapter is the case analysis mainly based on contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability.The last chapter summarizes experiences and problems encountered in the translation practice.The translation report aims to build an interdisciplinary awareness and helps readers understand the relationship between multimodality and translation.Meanwhile,it guides translators on how to choose translation strategies,translation methods,and translation skills to deal with musical texts. |
