| In order to explore the performance and motivation of Sogdians and their descendants in the Sui and Tang dynasties on residence and burial issues,this paper uses mathematical statistics and other methods to comprehensively analyze the epitaph information of Sogdians combined with literature and historical books.This paper includes the following three parts.Before formal discussion,the first part should be briefly introduce the basic situation of the Sogdians who came and settled in Chang’ an and Luoyang before Sui and Tang Dynasties and experience of the Northern Government in planning Sogdian residences and burial sites.The second part is to discuss the overall distribution and diachronic changes of the residences and burial sites of the Sogdians in Chang’ an and Luoyang in the Sui and Tang Dynasties,and the relationship between the residences and burial sites,pointing out their locations and causes in the urban settlements and the concentrated burial areas outside the city.The third part is to analyze the similarities and differences between settlements,concentrated burial areas and burial relations of Sogdian in Chang’ an and Luoyang during Sui and Tang dynasties,and to summarize the underlying reasons for the behavior of the Sogdians on burial issues.As the political core area,the economic convergence place,the cultural exchange place,Chang ’ an and Luoyang were so prosperous that attracted a large number of Sogdian businessmen.Envoys,monks and artists were another important source of Sogdians who came to Chang ’ an and Luoyang.The resettlement area of foreigners in the south of Luoyang City in the Northern Wei Dynasty and the possible burial area of foreigners planned by the government in the eastern suburbs of Chang ’an City in the Western Wei and Northern Zhou Dynasties provided learning experience for the arrangement of Sogdian settlement and burial problems in the Sui and Tang dynasties.The choice of residence and burial sites of Sogdian in two capitals was the result of the mixture of natural environment,urban planning,economic status,customs and other factors.The residence of the Sogdians in the Sui and Tang Dynasties obviously absorbed and optimized the practices of the Northern Wei Dynasty.Constrained by the functional layout of the capital,the location and distance relationship of the Sogdians in Chang’ an shows a relatively significant phenomenon of nearby burial,and the existence of Mangshan Mountain makes most Sogdians in Luoyang break the obstacle of burial place distance.Living in the ruling center of the dynasty,the Sogdians and their descendants showed adherence to the national character and adaptation to the social background of the Chinese culture in the issue of burial,which can reflect many aspects of the Sogdians after their entry into China and it is necessary to develop in depth.As burial objects to marking the identity of the deceased,epitaphs are usually the most detailed records of the residence and burial location information.The investigation of the epitaphs of the Sogdians in the two capitals is conducive to a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the living conditions and psychological outlook of the Sogdians in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. |
