“Production-Oriented Approach”(POA)is a foreign language teaching theory with Chinese characteristics which was put forward by Professor Wen Qiufang. In recent years, many domestic scholars have conducted a lot of practical research from many aspects and achieved satisfactory teaching effects.Scholars have explored how to apply this theory to the teaching reform of English major skill-based courses, such as grammar, writing, listening, interpretation, oral English and so on.In recent years, some scholars have tried to apply this theory to non-English majors’ English learning, such as College English classroom teaching and the Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL).A few scholars have studied the relationship between POA and English proficiency of English learners, such as the effect of POA on College English writing, however, there are few studies on POA and oral English teaching.Blended Teaching mode is a combination of online teaching and face-to-face teaching mode.In the Blended Teaching mode, teachers and students use modern information technology to achieve a variety of teaching interactions. The teacher’s teaching behavior extends from in-class to in-class and out-of-class,and students can learn both online and offline.POA can provide better theoretical support for the implementation of Blended Teaching and combine online teaching and offline teaching effectively. However,in the previous studies, the students in higher vocational colleges are rarely taken as research subjects, and the studies integrating oral English Blended Teaching and POA are rather few.The present study is intended to apply POA in oral English Blended Teaching in a higher vocational college and explore the effects of the integration of POA and oral English Blended Teaching of the non-English-major students on their oral performance in terms of accuracy, fluency and complexity as well as their attitudes toward this kind of teaching mode. This study aims to address the following two questions:First, can the Blended Teaching based on POA improve non-English-major students’ oral English competence? In particular, what impact does it have on fluency, accuracy and complexity of students’ oral English?Second, can the Blended Teaching based on POA improve non-English-major students’ attitude in oral English learning? In this study, the subjects are 85 freshmen majoring in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. There are 47 students from Class 3 and 38 students from Class 4,and they are parallel classes taught by the same teacher.Class 3 is selected as the control class in which traditional teaching mode is adopted and Class 4 is the experimental class in which Blended Teaching mode based on POA is implemented. The experiment lasts 16 weeks, including two questionnaires and two tests and an interview. The data from the questionnaires and the pre-test and post-test of the oral English have been collected and analyzed by www.wjx.cn and SPSS25.0respectively.The results of this study show that Blended Teaching based on POA can improve the students’ attitude and oral English competence in the higher vocational college.Compared with the control class, the students in the experimental class have made greater progress in their oral English competence, and their attitudes toward English learning have been greatly improved, which shows that the application of POA in oral English Blended Teaching has positive effect on the improvement of the oral English teaching in higher vocational colleges.
