Metaphors play a crucial role in English literature,as they can add expressiveness and imagination to language, create powerful imagery, convey emotions, and vividly express viewpoints that may be difficult to articulate in ordinary language. However, due to the differences in language and culture, translating metaphors can be challenging for translators. It is essential for them to adopt appropriate metaphor translation strategies to accurately and effectively convey the meaning and cultural connotations of the metaphors in the original text. The translation of metaphors in English novels requires not only language skills but also a deep understanding of the cultural and social backgrounds of the source language metaphors.Incorrect translations can result in the meaning loss of a metaphor and lead to misunderstandings of the source language culture and text by readers. Therefore,it is crucial for translators to understand metaphors correctly and use appropriate translation strategies.During the translation of the novel This Time Tomorrow, the translator’ faced challenges when translation metaphors. To ensure the accuracy of the metaphor translation, the translator consulted relevant literature and utilized an appropriate theoretical framework to guide the translation process. This report aims to answer two key questions:(1)What is the cognitive mapping of metaphors in This Time Tomorrow?and(2)What metaphor translation strategies were utilized during the translation of This Time Tomorrow? This translation practice report focuses on the application of three principles of English-Chinese metaphor translation proposed by Liu(2008)from a cognitive perspective. These principles include(1)retaining the features of metaphors,(2)linking cultural connotations related to Chinese-English metaphors,and(3)supplementing the missing cultural elements of metaphors based on the context. These principles are premised on retaining a metaphor, and the four translation strategies proposed by Liu(2008)are all based on retaining the metaphor. These strategies include searching for corresponding metaphors in Chinese, expanding metaphors in the translator’s thinking and conveying the metaphor’s connotation, retaining the metaphor’s image and explaining it,and using explicit similes to replace metaphors. The translator also found that some metaphor translation problems could not be resolved by using these four strategies,so a fifth translation strategy was added, which involves mixing two or more similar metaphors to solve the translation problem of a metaphor. This translation practice report is an application of Liu’s(2008)three principles of metaphor translation and the four major metaphor translation strategies. It emphasizes the importance of the cognitive perspective in metaphor translation and provides effective translation principles and techniques for translators to adopt in their translation practices. These translation methods consider the language forms and cultural mappings of the source language and target language concepts, enabling translators to explore the shared elements in metaphor expression between the source and target languages.Additionally, the report emphasizes the significance of conveying meaning while retaining metaphor mappings.Understanding and using appropriate translation strategies for metaphors are essential for translators to accurately convey the meaning and cultural connotations of the English novel.
