| This report is based on translation of the book The Money Revolution:How to Finance the Next American Century,written by Richard Duncan,an American economist.The book describes the evolution of money and monetary policy over the past century and the changes of economic system brought about by the evolution,as well as offers suggestions and outlooks for the future of the U.S.economy.These suggestions are also of help to our future development.The main linguistic feature of the book is that the book is full of parentheses.And parentheses need to be paid extra attention when translating,because if not coped with properly,the translation will become obscure and thus difficult for readers to understand.In light of this,the parentheses should be translated into idiomatic Chinese.Based on analysis of the target text and after reviewing the literature of other people,this report summarizes five methods including keeping parentheses in the original place,embedding,splitting,adding words or omitting,and recasting.Under each translation method,several examples are listed and analyzed in detail to fully illustrate the feasibility of the translation method.The five methods can be adopted according to different context when translating parentheses from English to Chinese.In this report,only two chapters of the selected book are translated,but I hope the conclusion drawn from the translation task will be of help to the study of parentheses. |
