A Study Of Folk Dance In Shanghai During The Republic Of China

The period of the Republic of China was a complex and special period in History of China,during which Shanghai faced a turbulent situation not seen for thousands of years.The legacy of the revolution has led to earth shaking changes in Shanghai’s society,economy,politics,culture,and daily life.Under the interweaving influence of diverse cultures at home and abroad,local folk dance was a new term with distinctive characteristics of the era during the Republic of China period,and began to develop in Shanghai as an emerging cultural product of music and dance art.During the Republic of China period,Shanghai witnessed the collision and interweaving of various new and old folk dance cultures,presenting the inheritance and innovation of ancient and modern folk dances,as well as the interweaving and integration of foreign and Chinese folk dances.From a macro historical perspective,the development of local dance in Shanghai during the Republic of China period can be divided into four stages.The first stage is the embryonic period of local dance,and most of the popular local dances were introduced from the West,with relatively few dance types and related reports.The second stage is the most prosperous stage for the development of folk dances,with various types of folk dances at home and abroad complementing each other,and there are rich historical records.In the third stage,due to the rise of entertainment bans and dance bans in Shanghai,the development of local dance is inevitably affected and difficult.The fourth stage is after the victory of the Anti Japanese War,where society gradually stabilized,the economy began to recover,and various local dances once again entered the public’s view.The development of local dance during the Republic of China period is closely related to the development of school education and social life in Shanghai.Having a strong physique,developing aesthetic education,and liberating the mind for school education;It plays an important role in improving women’s status,promoting interpersonal relationships and promoting the development of social entertainment industry in social life.This paper will conduct a detailed analysis of the development of folk dance from the perspectives of school education and social life.Finally,a functional summary will be made from the three layered phenomena of the original,secondary,and regenerative nature of folk dance.This paper will showcase the specific development of local dance in Shanghai during the Republic of China period from the perspective of various historical materials,including different countries,ethnic groups,characteristics,and flavors.By using research methods such as historical research,historical literature,and statistical analysis,it attempts to construct and restore the development landscape and context of local dance during the Republic of China period.Studying the relevant historical materials of local dance during this period is not only about studying itself,but more importantly,interpreting the social trends and reflecting the development of the era through the products of such a special era.
