The reform of the new curriculum and core competencies require that the contents of the courses be connected to real life and the student’s life experience.The contents should focus on students as the subject of study and their participation in class activities.English,as a practical subject,also has the function of determining that the learning of English courses should be connected with real life.Therefore,for senior high school English teachers,classroom teaching should not only input language knowledge but also pay attention to students’ lives.It should find the right point of entry from students’ life experience accurately and link them to English classroom teaching so as to improve student’s practical ability of using English and make the learning process into the process of experiencing life.In order to find out the current situation of life-oriented English teaching in senior high school in Tongliao,the author selects English teachers and students in a senior high school in Tongliao as the research subjects and investigates 36 English teachers and 436 students through questionnaire,interview,and classroom observation,and tries to explore the following two questions:(1)What is the current situation of implementing life-oriented English teaching in senior high school in the Tongliao area?(2)What measures can be put forward to solve the problems? The finding shows that,although some teachers in this school have already realized the importance of life-oriented English teaching,they still need to implement it into all aspects of teaching.According to the survey results,the chief problem in implementing life-oriented English teaching in senior high school is that the teacher’s training system is imperfect,the implementation of life-oriented teaching is incomplete,and the processing of teaching materials and integration of resources are deficient.Based on the above research results,the author puts forward the following suggestions from the perspectives of schools,teachers,and students.Firstly,schools should enhance teachers’ training,strengthen collective lesson preparation,develop elective courses,and enrich English subject activities.Secondly,teachers should optimize teaching contents,assign life-oriented homework,strengthen practical exercises,and extend various life-oriented teaching activities.Thirdly,students should explore resources outside the classroom and actively participate in English activities.Finally,the author expects that the findings of this paper can offer senior high school English teachers in the Tongliao area some workable recommendations to support the adoption of life-oriented English teaching.
