Research On Intercultural Contact And Intercultural Competence Of English Majors In Guangxi

Abstract/Summary:
Intercultural competence is regarded as a basic requirement for foreign language majors in National Standards for the Teaching Quality of Undergraduate Majors in Colleges and Universities(2018).There were many studies on college students’ intercultural competence in the past,but there were rare studies on college students in ethnic minority regions.Guangxi,as the window and to ASEAN,has increasingly frequent intercultural exchanges.Therefore,it is necessary to study the intercultural contact and intercultural competence of college students in Guangxi and to provides reference for other regions.Based on the theoretical foundation of intercultural contact theory and intercultural competence model,this study took 265 English majors from X University in Guangxi as survey subjects.The author combined the Assessment of Intercultural Competence of Chinese College Students(AIC-CCS)and the Intercultural Contact Scale of Chinese College Students(ICSCCS),and used SPSS 26.0 for data processing.10 interviewees were selected for semi-structured interviews to supplement the quantitative data.The analyses were conducted to answer the following three research questions:(1)What is the status quo of participants’ intercultural contact?(2)What is the status quo of participants’ intercultural competence?(3)How does participants’ intercultural competence correlate with intercultural contact?The results indicate that:(1)In general,students don’t have intercultural contact quite often.They seldom have direct contact,which is mainly through contact with foreign teachers in schools,and participation in cultural activities.But students often engage in indirect intercultural contact,such as contact with foreign cultures through a variety of cultural products.(2)The results of the intercultural competence questionnaire for Chinese college students show that the overall intercultural competence of students is at an average level.Their mastery of cognitive skills in intercultural communication is not enough.However,they did very well in terms of intercultural awareness and attitudes.(3)There is a positive correlation between intercultural contact and intercultural competence on the whole.Except for the fact that there is no significant correlation between direct intercultural contact and the dimensions of attitudes and awareness of intercultural competence,the results show that both direct and indirect intercultural contact has a positive correlation with all other dimensions of intercultural communicative competence.Based on the results,this study provides suggestions for university teachers and students to help students learn cultural knowledge and improve their intercultural competence and discusses prospects of future research.
