| The author selected for translation “Ensuring American Leadership in Automated Vehicle Technologies: Automated Vehicles 4.0”(called “AV 4.0” in short),an official guidance document on automated vehicle technologies released by the United States in January,2020.It was jointly developed by the United States Department of Transportation and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, aiming to coordinate the work on automated vehicle technologies across 38 federal departments, independent agencies, councils and the Executive Office of the President,so as to foster coordination and information sharing among stakeholders and finally to ensure American leadership in automated vehicle technologies. The author selected the main content(I-IV)of the document and translated it into Chinese with an aim to provide certain reference for the development of automated vehicle technologies in China.Functional Equivalence Theory advocates that in translation, one should not aim for a rigid and literal correspondence, but instead strive for the functional equivalence between the source text and the target text in four aspects, namely, lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence. It is of great guiding significance to the translation of informative text.“AV 4.0” is a typical official guidance document and belongs to the informative text. Therefore, the author chose Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation practice, and strove to accurately convey the original information and style of the source text.Through translation practice,it is found that in order to achieve functional equivalence between the source text and the target text,a variety of translation techniques can be adopted, such as annotation and amplification for lexical equivalence, division and voice conversion for syntactic equivalence, omission and amplification for textual equivalence, formal wording and retaining positive connotations for stylistic equivalence.By using the aforementioned translation techniques, the author attempts to properly translate the official guidance document and achieve functional equivalence in translation to a certain extent, and simultaneously, hopes to provide some reference for the translation of official guidance documents in the field of automated vehicles. |
