Primary school is an important stage of school education, and first grade,as the starting point of primary education,is crucial to children’s subsequent learning and lifelong development. When entering first grade, about 30%~40% of new students face various adaptation problems in their physical, academic, and social interactions due to the impact of environmental differences and role changes.Without timely intervention, some children develop anxiety, aversion to learning, and even aggressive behavior, which severely affects their physical and mental health. Therefore,it is crucial to provide effective adaptation education to help children quickly adapt to primary school life. However, most teachers and parents only focus on the knowledge connection level of children’s adaptation education and ignore their physical and mental adaptation, which ultimately leads to undesirable outcomes. Some parents also feel anxious and uncertain about their child’s transition to primary school, unsure of how to help their child ease into the new environment. Therefore,it is important to seek media that are easily accessible to parents and preferred by children to solve parents’ confusion, improve the adaptability of first-grade newcomers, alleviate their anxiety, and promote children’s physical and mental health development. In this study,we use the literature analysis method to sort out the current situation of research and to understand the theoretical knowledge of "adjustment to school" and "picture book design";we use the interview method and the creative drawing method to conduct research on first-grader newcomers, parents and teachers to explore the adjustment problems that first-grade students urgently need to solve.Using case analysis,we analyzed classic and related picture books, summarized the design principles and processes of picture books, and identified the successful aspects of picture books with similar themes.Following the picture book design process,we finally designed the picture book "The First Day of School." Supported by the "Bandura Observational Learning Theory" and "Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory," the picture book’s story plot was developed based on the prominent adaptation problems faced by first-grade newcomers in social interactions, daily habits,self-care ability, learning ability, and study habits in the four aspects of preparation before school, classroom learning, recess activities, and social interactions. We also followed the picture book design principles, drew on the successes of the design of excellent picture books of similar themes, and combined the physical and mental development characteristics of children at this stage to create a coherent and rhythmic panel design,child-friendly rhyming text,Q-version character design, convenient phonetic font for children’s reading, warm color matching to create a cozy atmosphere, and interactive design to enhance children’s interest in reading and deep perception of the picture book’s content. Finally,we used elements from the picture book to create derivative products, extending the practical value of the picture book and helping achieve the goal of improving the adaptability of first-grade newcomers. This study provides insights and references for using picture books to solve children’s education problems while also improving their adaptation ability and alleviating their anxiety. |
