English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(2017)clearly pointed out that "we should further promote students’ English subject core competencies on the basis of compulsory education so as to make students become socialist builders and successors with love for China,international vision and cross-cultural communication abilities." Under the background of new curriculum reform,high school English class should not only cultivate and develop students’ subject core competencies,but also integrate ideological and political elements in English teaching,considering the dual cultivation objectives of moral and intellectual education.At the same time,Guangdong Province promoted the use of new PEP English textbooks in September2020.English teachers are still at the exploratory stage in grasping the content of these textbooks.Therefore,it is necessary to study ideological and political elements and integrate them into the curriculum of new textbooks.This study aims to explore the following research questions:(1)What is the current situation of integrating ideological and political elements in English reading teaching?(2)What are the ideological and political elements in the Reading and Thinking section of high school English textbooks?(3)How are ideological and political elements integrated in English reading teaching?In order to find out the current situation of integrating ideological and political elements in English reading teaching,SPSS statistical software was used to analyze131 teacher questionnaires quantitatively and analyze teacher interviews qualitatively.Based on three-level coding of grounded theory,this study explores the content of ideological and political elements by frequency analysis in Reading and Thinking section of 2019 PEP English textbooks Compulsory 1-3 and Selective Compulsory1-2 combined with the classification of ideological and political elements by Curriculum Standards(2017),the Guide(2017)and relevant scholars.According to the content of ideological and political elements in the textbooks,this thesis puts forward ideological and political teaching methods for senior high school English reading teaching based on the theory of constructivism.The main conclusions of this study are as follows:At present,high school English teachers do not have a deep understanding of ideological and political concepts of the curriculum.Although most teachers agree to infiltrate the ideological and political elements in English teaching,they usually adopt a single teaching method when implementing the ideological and political elements of the curriculum.This study mined four first-level elements which are ideal and belief,mental health,social participation,and international perspective;eight second-level elements such as national identity,value identity,etc.;and 21 third-level elements such as patriotism,honesty,etc.The ideological and political elements of the curriculum are widely distributed in new textbooks,among which international perspective(30.49%)accounts for the highest proportion,followed by mental health(24.39%)and social participation(24.39%),and ideals and beliefs(20.73%)accounts for a relatively small proportion.However,textbooks are lacking in ideological and political elements such as integrity,adaptation to the environment,life safety,green conservation,and cultural dissemination.Based on the current situation of ideological and political teaching in high school English courses,referring to the literature on ideological and political teaching methods at home and abroad,this thesis puts forward situational teaching method,culture comparison method and project-based teaching method to be applied to the ideological and political teaching of new textbooks.The aim is to provide teaching references for English teachers in the ideological and political process of English curriculum.The current research studied ideological and political elements in PEP textbooks with mixed methods,which not only shows how to mine the ideological and political elements,but also provides suggestions on how to integrate the ideological and political elements in English reading teaching.The results provide reference path for senior high school English teachers to integrate curriculum ideological and political in English reading teaching.
