A Practice Report On Simulated Consecutive Interpreting Of Premier Li Keqiang’s Press Conference In 2022 Under The Guidance Of Chesterman’s Translation Norms

Over the past few decades,with the growth of its overall national strength and the deepening of exchanges with other countries,China has witnessed increasingly prominent international influence.As a vital diplomatic window to convey China’s attitudes,positions and principles and policies,the annual Premier’s press conference has aroused widespread attention of the world.Serving as an important bridge of communication at the Premier’s press conference,the interpreter must be in possession of high professional competence and on-site adaptability,delivering the original information accurately and explicitly so as to promote mutual understanding among all parties to ensure the smoothness and success of the press conference.The present author implemented her simulated consecutive interpreting practice of Premier Li Keqiang’s press conference after the Session of the National People’s Congress in 2022,under the guidance of Chesterman’s translation norms.Chesterman divided translation norms into expectancy norms and professional norms.The former consists of qualitative expectancy norms and quantitative expectancy norms,while the latter can be subsumed under three higher-order norms: the accountability norm,the communication norm,and the relation norm.This practice report analyzes some typical examples from this simulated consecutive interpreting practice from the perspectives of expectancy norms and professional norms,discussing the guiding significance of Chesterman’s translation norms on consecutive interpreting,proving that they can offer significant implications for interpreting practice and interpreting studies.In addition,on the basis of this simulated consecutive interpreting practice,the author puts forwards some specific suggestions as to how to enhance the interpreter’s performance.First,during the pre-task preparation,it is important to determine the potential audience of the interpreting task,understand their expectation for interpreting,and learn about their language habits.Second,interpreting strategies should be emphasized in the interpreter’s daily practice to ensure that the interpreter can use them naturally instead of mechanically under the guidance of the norms.Third,the interpreter must keep a close eye on current affairs taking place at home and abroad,know about the latest policy orientation and position of the Chinese government,and remain highly sensitive during the interpreting process.Fourth,researchers are expected to further explore the value of Chesterman’s translation norms with regard to different interpreting occasions as well as the subjects under discussion.
