Honeysuckle Season is a suspense novel written by Mary Allen Taylor. The story revolves around heroine Libby. With a unique female perspective to describe the plots delicately, the story grabs the target readers’ attention successfully.Translation theorist Peter Newmark first put forward that semantic translation focuses on reproducing the original form and the writing logic of the original author when the semantic and syntactic structures of the target language are similar to those of the original language.Communicative translation is target text oriented and focuses on the reading experience of target readers. The application of semantic and communicative translation has been analyzed through case analysis in the translation of Honeysuckle Season from chapter one to chapter three in this report.By the guidance of semantic translation, transliteration, correspondence, annotation and zero translation were utilized so that the target text can retain the syntactic structures and characteristics of the source language and enable the target readers to feel refreshed and to be more interested in reading the translated version.Similarly, according to communicative translation, substitution, conversion, amplification and omission were utilized so that the gap can be narrowed between the target readers and the author.Last,in order to further improve the quality of translation, semantic and communicative translation was integrated by utilizing syntactic linearity plus division and literal translation plus restructuring to take into account the linguistic characteristics of the source and target languages. The translation practice shows that semantic and communicative translation can better ensure the quality of translation. Moreover, semantic and communicative translation complements each other and better achieves the purpose of promoting cross-cultural communication in literary works.Secondly, the translation practice and the writing of the report have promoted the translator’s understanding of semantic and communicative translation. However, the limitations of the techniques used in the translation are inevitable, and further improvements are needed.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 36...
