The material of this translation report is excerpted from Sailing Seven Seas: A History of Canadian Pacific Line, written by an Canadian author,Peter Pigott. It is a navigation document, the main theme of which is the development of the Canadian Pacific Railway with many main figures and historical events in navigation as the branches. This text is rigorous with detailed background information. And there are numerous Nominal Clauses acted as nouns specifying the events or arguments.Different from Chinese run-on sentence, such clauses have complex and linked syntax, making it a primarily thorny problem to translator in English-Chinese translation. The distinctions between Chinese and English expression are the origin of that problem and enlarge the gap between the syntax of both.In the source text, the Nominal Clauses are characterized by hypotaxis and tree-structure form with more nouns and preposition, presenting strong static feature. While Chinese is dynamic language, which has parataxis and bamboo syntactic structure with more verbs. Therefore,as translating Nominal Clauses into Chinese, the translator should analyze the syntactic elements, and then adjust the order of the sentence appropriately, break the whole into parts, change static into dynamic, and change the part of speech and structure.According to this translating procedure, the report applies the methods of splitting translation, inversion, conversion and comprehensive translation to probe the English-Chinese translation methods of Nominal Clauses in the text, aiming to retain the linguistic features, restore the information of the source text and make a faithful and smooth translation with high quality.
