| Since ancient times, China has always been the formidable empire of navigation with its prosperous marine expansion, prospering route exploitation and flourishing transaction. "A History of Ancient Chinese Traditional Navigation " is the collection of the glamorous navigational history of China, which records abundant data about ancient Chinese marine navigation, including its sailing routes, itinerary countries and cities, invented navigation tools, and established maritime institutions. There are multifarious terms in this collection, whose accurate translation is crucial. However, the translation methods and principles differ greatly, which makes the study of navigation science terms important.With the translation practice of "A History of Ancient Chinese Navigation" being the basis, and the theory of modern terminology being the guideline, this report illustrates the translation method of navigation science terms. First, it discusses the classification principles and methods of Chinese navigation science terms. According to the theory of modern terminology, terms could be classified into two categories---"single-word term" and "phrase term"; On the basis of the function of the translated terms, they could further be divided into "term of navigational tool", "term of shipbuilding" and "term of astronomical and geographical navigation". Second, this report analyzes the translational principle of navigation science terms. When conducting the translation practice of term, specialization, accuracy, conventionalization, and equivalence should be four principles to follow. Finally, this report analyses the translational methods of terminology, which includes literal translation, free translation, and translation with annotation. The accurate translation of Chinese navigation science terms would play a significant role in promoting Chinese culture, spreading national spirit and facilitating international cultural exchange. |
