| In recent years, academic exchanges between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent, and famous international English academic journals have become an important platform for such exchanges. The academic papers published on those journals have gradually become important information sources for researchers and learners of different disciplines. As far as translation academic journals are concerned, some of their intended readers are postgraduate students majoring in translation or taking translation as their research orientation. Some of them, who major in other foreign languages, have poor English or do not understand English at all,so they cannot effectively read English academic journal papers. In view of this,it is of practical significance to select representative English translation journal articles to be translated into Chinese for the reference of this part of readers. The original text of the translation task involved in this practice report is selected from the famous international translation research journal The Translator. Its Chinese translation will be included in the corpus of translation teaching materials accumulated by the author’s tutor after being modified and improved, mainly for the academic type of postgraduate students who are non-English(Russian or Japanese)majors studying translation. As a translation major student, the author,by selecting papers in international translation journals to carry out translation practice,on the one hand, can timely understand the trends of translation studies and increase translation theoretical knowledge;on the other hand,if she persists in it for a long time, she will accumulate and form an English-Chinese parallel corpus of international translation research papers, which will provide nutrition and language sources for China to develop translation theories that are more in line with its own reality and have its own characteristics, and will help to improve the level of translation studies in China. On the basis of confirming the type of the original text by referring to Reiss’ text type theory, this paper analyzes the linguistic characteristics of the original text by using Nord’s text analysis theory, and then discusses the translation problems encountered in the process of translating the paper into Chinese from the lexical and syntactic levels. The translation problems at the word level mainly include inappropriate choice of word meaning, inaccurate expression of terminology as well as proper names and unclear word reference;the translation problems at the syntactic level are mainly the improper arrangement of word order, the unclear division of meaning groups and the nonstandard transformation of marks or symbols. In view of these problems, the author has taken corresponding countermeasures. For the inappropriate choice of word meaning, the author has analyzed the context of the words more carefully, tried to understand the original text, grasped the true meaning of the words, and checked whether the meaning of the words is close to the basic tone of the original text by consulting reference books and carefully proofreading repeatedly. For the problem of inaccurate expression of terminology as well as proper names, the author has standardized her translation mainly by consulting reference books or referring to the statements in authoritative authors’ literature. For the problem of unclear reference of words, the author has mainly strengthened the overall awareness and accurately determined the reference object of words according to the theme of the whole article. At the syntactic level, for the inappropriate arrangement of word order, the author has systematically learned the differences in word order between Chinese and English, and translate them according to the habitual usage of the target language. For the unclear division of meaning groups, the author has clarified the relationship between meaning groups through more detailed grammatical analysis of the original text. The problem of nonstandard conversion of marks or symbols has been solved by systematically studying the usage of punctuation marks and other symbols involved and translating them in a way that conforms to the norms of the target language. This paper consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly introduces the task background, the task significance and the report content. The second part is the task process, including preparation, translation and revision. The third part is the literature review and linguistic features of the original text.It introduces the relevant studies on the English-Chinese translation of academic journal papers and the linguistic features of The Translator paper. The fourth part is about the problems and countermeasures of the Chinese translation of The Translator’s article. The fifth part is the conclusion,in which the author describes her experience in completing the translation practice task and reflects on its limitations and shortcomings. |
