Listening activity is a process in which the brain perceives, encodes, analyzes and stores information.Since sufficient input is a prerequisite for output and the ability of listening is the basis for learning various language knowledge and skills, listening skills play a pivotal role in improving students’ overall English language ability especially oral communication. However, the current mode of English listening teaching to junior high school students is relatively single and boring, and students are tired of listening learning.English listening teaching has not achieved the expected effect. The multimodal teaching method can use the synergistic relationship of the multimodal resources to apply visual, auditory, tactile and other multi-symbolic resources to listening teaching, which can reduce the difficulty of listening, turn the single sound modal listening teaching into interesting, vivid and visual multimodal listening teaching, and improve students’ abilities to retrieve information. This study, guided by the Visual Grammar and Integrated Framework of the Multimodal Discourse Analysis, emphasizes inter-modal synergy, and combines existing research on multimodal listening teaching with teaching experiment and interview to investigate the following questions:(1)What are the effects of the multimodal listening teaching method on junior high school students’ English listening competence?(2)What are the effects of the multimodal listening teaching method on the English listening competence of junior high school students at different listening levels? In this study,93 students from two parallel classes in the third year of a junior high school in Guangzhou are used as subjects, one class as the experimental class and the other as the control class. The duration of the experiment lasted for twelve weeks. The experimental data are collected and entered into SPSS 18.0 software for the independent sample test.Besides, the interview is used as an auxiliary tool to provide qualitative statistics. The study arrives at the following conclusions:(1)The multimodal listening teaching method has a certain effect on the improvement of students’ English listening competence.(2)For students at different listening levels, the multimodal teaching method can improve the listening competence of students at high-level,mid-level and low-level students.Among them, the multimodal listening teaching method has a significant effect on the listening competence of mid-level students and low-level students.Based on the above findings and the students’ opinions of the multimodal listening teaching method, the author puts forward some pedagogical implications and points out the inadequacies of the study. It is hoped that the results of this study can provide a reference for subsequent related studies.
