Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is divided into three parts: a source text,a target text, and a translation report. The source text, which contains more than 11,000 words, was selected from a volume entitled Using CAT Tools in Freelance Translation: Insight from a Case Study(Chapters 4-5),written by Paulina Pietrzak and Micha(?) Kornacki and published by Routledge in2021.The report based on this practice, according to Catford’s translation shifts theory and in view of the differences between Chinese and English, analyzes and discusses the phenomenon of level shifts, structure shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts in terms of vocabulary, syntax, and grammar in translation. The report consists of four chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the source text, its authors, and the significance of this translation practice.Chapter 2 focuses on the preparation before translation, the process of translation, and the proofreading after translation.Chapter 3 reviews Catford’s translation shifts theory and analyzes its applicability to this translation practice. Moreover, based on the concepts of level shifts and category shifts in Catford’s theory,Chapter 4,based upon level shifts and category shifts, selects 46 typical examples to analyze the application of shifts at different levels and types in this translation practice. The last chapter is the conclusion and reflection of this translation practice. In this translation practice,Catford’s translation shifts theory is effective in translating an informative text.On the one hand, for the key and difficult points caused by the morphological change of the SL,the translator can convert English grammatical meanings into Chinese lexical meanings to ensure the accuracy of language information. On the other hand, for the difficulties in syntactic structures and vocabulary, the translator can apply structure shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts to present a better Chinese version that is more fluent and more in line with the reading habits of Chinese readers. At the same time, some appropriate translation methods such as addition, omission, splitting, and reframing are also necessary to help the translator free herself from the shackles of the syntactic structures of the source language. In this way,the target text can convey the information of the original text as well as possible. The translator expects that this practice will help readers know more about CAT technology and will be used as a reference for the later translation of the same type of scientific and technological information texts.
