Throughout the ages,happiness has defined the life goal of all nations including China and other countries.And China particularly,with its reform and opening up policies that aim at material affluence and spiritual well-being,has been flying like a bullet train heading for an all-round modernization.The Chinese nation,inclusive of all its ethnic groups,has gained much material earnings and spiritual well-being.The Chinese Way to Happiness is such a fabulous work on how to raise people’s sense of happiness in contemporary China,offering people suggestions to pursue happy lives.The translator’s task involves the first and second sections of Chapter 3 that focus primarily on potential sources for happiness.This report is based on the Chinese-English translation project whose text should be regarded as informative that states mere facts.The vital task for the translator is,therefore,to convey the information encoded in the source text in an accurate way.It seems to agree with the stress of Translation Shifts proposed by J.C.Catford,so the translator adopts it as a guide for her translation and report.Apart from “level shifts”,other strategies such as “unit shifts”,“structure shifts”,and “category shifts” are used to shoot problems involving with long complex sentences and multiple attributive clauses in the language-shifting process.The first part of the report deals with the background and significance of this project.The second narrates the process of translation,including preparations done before,major difficulties encountered in,and proofreading carried out after the translation.The third part presents Translation Shifts while the fourth focuses on an analysis of representative cases from both level shifts and category shifts.The fifth part summarizes the translator’s experience from and shortcomings of the project,to provide a reference for her further translation of such informative texts. |
