Research On The Portrayal Of Female Characters In Chinese Animated Films

Animation is a comprehensive form of artistic expression that reflects the culture and ideology of a country.Cartoons from every period map the prevailing ideology of society at the time.Cartoons are an integral part of the learning and growing environment of young people,and the concepts and messages conveyed in them have a subtle influence on them.Therefore,the content and the correct guidance of the concepts need to be carefully scrutinised.Over the past few decades,the construction of gender and the portrayal of female characters in Chinese animated films has been relatively neglected,such as the lack of individuality,passivity,vulnerability and tradition.However,with the rise and development of China’s animation industry,more and more female characters are beginning to be portrayed in a diverse and independent manner.These characters are no longer simply portrayed as passive and in need of protection,but have a strong sense of individuality,intelligence and courage.At the same time,these characters also take on a more diverse image,including a variety of occupations,personalities and identities.The portrayal of female characters in Chinese animated films is influenced by many factors,such as social culture and audience needs.Therefore,when studying the portrayal of female characters in Chinese animated films,these factors need to be taken into account.In addition,the study of the portrayal of female characters in Chinese animated films also needs to explore the development of the animation industry,the audience’s perception and evaluation of female characters,the commercial value of female character portrayal in the animation industry and so on.Through these studies,we can better understand the image portrayal and development trend of female characters in Chinese animated films.This paper adopts the methods of literature research and case study to study the portrayal of female characters in Chinese animated films,analyse the changes of female animated characters in China,and summarise the contradictions and problems reflected by the female characters portrayed in animated works.Previous creators have improved the female characters portrayed in each time period,but controlling the balance of gender roles in animated films still needs to be discussed.The study is divided into four main parts: the first part compares the development of Chinese cartoons,analyses the characteristics of the portrayal of female characters in Chinese cartoons in each time period,and reveals the evolution of female characters during the development of the times;the second part analyses and argues the solidified images formed by typical female characters in Chinese cartoons in the twentieth century,analyses the solidified images of female characters from a visual perspective,and deciphers the types of female characters.The third part analyses female animation characters in the twenty-first century,taking the animated film "The Origin of the White Snake" as a case study,and analyses the advantages and problems of combining the diversified portrayal of female characters with contemporary aesthetics in the design of costumes and props;the fourth part,based on the development of the portrayal of female characters in Chinese animation films,puts forward suggestions for the stylistic design and movement performance of the characters.The fourth section presents suggestions for the modelling of character design and movement performance based on the development of female characterisation in Chinese animation,and summarises the analysis of the Chinese national style and contemporary characteristics of female characters.As times change,the formation of social values has become deeply rooted in people’s minds,and the difficulty of disappearing completely has led to the constant emergence of solidified images of female animated characters,which will be difficult to achieve without breaking the shackles of tradition and creating realistic and diverse female characters.Animation is a mirror of the real world,it should reflect reality and correctly interpret,embody and guide social concepts.Chinese animators have been exploring characterisation that reflects the characteristics of the nation and the times.The unique charm of national culture needs to be kept up to date,and female animated characters should also be portrayed in an international manner.By interpreting the characteristics of female animation characters over the past hundred years,we summarise the characteristics and methods of female portrayal in Chinese animation,and provide useful reference for the development of female animation character portrayal in China.
