The Study Of Oracle Bone Inscriptions By Chen Bangfu

Chen Bangfu(1893—1977),a native of Dantu,Jiangsu Province,is an expert in the study of Oracle bones,Zhong Ding and inscriptions in modern times,and has an important position in the modern academic history.Chen’s writings are abundant throughout his life,and his works on oracle bones mainly include Yinxvmaiqikao(《殷墟薶契考》)(Shangdaishiguomaibukao(《商代失国薶卜考》))、Yinqibianyi(《殷契辨疑》)、yinqishuocun(《殷契说存》)、Yinqisuoyan(《殷契3)言》)and Yinxvwenzizhuilingkaoshi(《殷墟文字缀零考释》).These works,which involve the textual criticism of characters and words and the textual criticism of history,played an important role in the early study of Oracle Bone Inscriptions.In recent years,the academic community has begun to attach importance to the research and summary of the academic achievements of the older generation of ancient philologists,and a large number of research results have emerged.In contrast,the research on Chen Bangfu is slightly insufficient.This article takes Chen Bangfu’s oracle bone studies as the research object,sorts out and proofreads these works,and systematically summarizes the interpretation methods used by Chen Bangfu in the practice of oracle bone text interpretation,as well as the oracle bone research ideas infiltrated in his interpretation.This provides experience and reference for further research on ancient Chinese characters in the future.The overall chapters of this paper are arranged as follows: The introduction mainly introduces the origin of the topic,research materials,research status,research methods and innovations;The first chapter introduces Chen Bangfu’s life and academic contributions;Chapter 2 conducts a review of Chen’s five oracle bone inscriptions one by one;Chapter 3analyzes the interpretation methods of Chen Bangfu’s oracle bone script from the perspectives of form,sound,and meaning;Chapter 4 is an evaluation of Chen Bangfu’s oracle bone research.The second,third,and fourth chapters are the focus of the research.The research methods used in the article include literature review,comparative analysis,and inductive organization.Through research,it has been summarized that Chen Bangfu’s interpretation of oracle bone inscriptions mainly uses methods such as form based interpretation,sound based interpretation,meaning based interpretation,and direct identification;Chen Bangfu’s interpretation of oracle bone inscriptions shows the characteristics of giving priority to meaning,supplemented by form and sound,and the comprehensive use of various methods.Chen Bangfu’s achievements in the study of oracle bone inscriptions are mainly reflected in the use of oracle inscriptions to verify historical records,providing important references for later researchers;Chen’s research negligence mainly manifests in three aspects: lack of research methods,lack of research systems,and incorrect interpretation results.
