Gaetano Donizetti(1797-1848)was a composer in the Romantic style who wrote in many musical genres, including 75 operas. His personal style of writing music and his meticulous portrayal of operatic characters have made him immortal in the history of opera.Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor was written in 1835 to a libretto by Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, with a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano based on the original novel. The opera has Donizetti’s unique style of music composition, known for its beautiful orchestral melodic lines, rich harmonic sound and compelling plot. The article will take the operatic repertoire as a starting point and,on the basis of previous studies, examine four of the most representative repertoire pieces in Lucia di Lammermoor: Qui di sposa eterna fede(Be my ever faithful bride),Verranno la sull ’aure),’If you betray me’(Se tradirmi tu potrai),’Who can stop my anger at this moment’(Chi mi frena in tal momento),for an in-depth artistic analysisThe paper is divided into four chapters. The first part of chapter one provides a brief overview of the history of repertory singing and its expressive role in opera, and the second part classifies the repertory works in Lucia di Lammermoor. The second chapter is divided into four sections, the first of which provides a briefer account of the main story elements of the opera;the second of which deals with the musical distribution of repertory singing in the opera. The analysis includes the distribution of roles and voices, the distribution of repertory singing, and the expressive function of repertory works in the opera, thus reflecting the dramatic role of repertory singing in Lucia di Lammermoor;the third part is devoted to the analysis of the dramatic image of the repertory characters in the opera, led by Lucia, for the grasp of characterisation, which,in the process of studying the interpretation, helps to clarify the relationships of the characters interwoven in the same repertory. The fourth part is a functional classification of the eight repertory pieces concerning Lucia’s participation. The third chapter focuses on the analysis of repertory works and aims to explore the characteristics of repertory singing in opera taking the analysis of the singing of four classical repertory works as the object of study, with specific studies on emotional performance, vocal control, musical characteristics and character portrayal in opera respectively.Chapter 4 explores the value of reprise singing in opera from the perspective of practical stage performance, with solid vocal foundations, comprehensive stage performance and improved overall literacy as three aspects of the value of reprise singing in Lucia di Lammermoor.Based on the combing of Donizetti’s operatic compositional style, the author outlines the specific features of Donizetti’s operatic repertory composition in a theoretical research exposition, combined with the completion of the score, and the orchestration accompaniment, harmonic weaving, and singing methods,so that singers can understand the connotation of the work at a deeper level in practice and study, and shape a multi-faceted and three-dimensional character image, with certain theoretical significance and reference value.
