According to English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(later called New Curriculum Standards)issued by the Ministry of Education in 2022,junior high school students must master the following micro-skills: be able to express simple opinions and ideas;be able to communicate and negotiate with others;be able to effectively ask for information and help;be able to conduct situational conversations based on topics;be able to perform plays in English;be able to speak naturally with appropriate pronunciation and intonation during oral activities.Changchun Municipal Education Bureau Office also officially announces that the oral test will be contained in Junior High School Entrance Examination.It brings both opportunities and challenges to oral English teaching in junior high school.The majority of junior high school English teachers and researchers focus on updating the teaching mode,reforming the teaching method,and improving the students?oral micro-skills as much as possible.The situational Teaching Method believes that teachers creating a concrete situation that is colorful and vivid to arouse students? positive and healthy emotional experience,stimulate students? learning enthusiasm and initiative,and solve the problem of insufficient learning motivation.The theoretical basis of the Situational Teaching Method is Situational Cognitive Learning Theory,Second Language Acquisition,and Constructivism.The above theories emphasize situational and consultative characteristics of knowledge,situational and social characteristics of learning,and authentic characteristics of situational learning.Based on Situational Teaching Method,qualitative and quantitative research methods are adopted to answer the following three questions through questionnaires,classroom empirical research,and SPSS18.0 data analysis:1.What is the current situation of oral English teaching in junior high school?2.How can teachers apply Situational Teaching Method to oral English teaching in junior high school?3.What kinds of micro-skills can be improved by applying Situational Teaching Method to oral English teaching in junior high school?There are altogether 69 teachers and 680 students who have participated in the questionnaire survey.The survey shows that both teachers and students have active motivation in teaching and learning oral English while students? fluency in oral English is not great in that most students have no chance to practice oral English,and teachers lack effective teaching method to improve students? oral micro-skills.The level of oral English teaching in junior middle school can be effectively improved after utilizing the situational creation of short videos,interviews,and role substitution.Through the items analysis of test results,it is found that different oral micro-skills can be improved in different degrees:oral micro-skills such as pronunciation,intonation,fluency,and accuracy are not improved,while oral micro-skills such as imitation,retelling,reporting,and acting are significantly improved in the post-test results.The research results present important implications for oral English teaching in junior high school: based on the Situational Teaching Method,teachers should pay attention to the inevitable connection between internal knowledge and students? cognition,create situational tasks that can stimulate students? interest,help students internalize oral micro-skills in specific contexts,and enable students to communicate,participate,cooperate and negotiate in situations to acquire new knowledge.It is hoped that shortly,Situational Teaching Method can be widely used in junior high school oral English teaching.Meanwhile,it can promote listening,reading,writing,and other English skills.
