Tomb art is a form of expression of ancient Chinese thought, reflecting the artistic styles of successive dynasties,of which the tomb chamber murals are diverse and rich in content and vivid in image. The Wei,Jin and North and South Dynasties were important in the history of Chinese thought and aesthetics, and were a transitional period for tomb art. This study selects "tree" images with profound cultural connotations and rich symbolic meanings as the theme, and investigates the "tree" images in the tomb murals of the Wei-Jin and North-South dynasties based on the perspective of design, combined with the methods of iconography and symbolic analysis, and investigates The study investigates the regional characteristics, interrelationships and internal and external factors of the changes of the "tree" images, links the image forms and their cultural symbols, historical genes, etc.,and organically combines the epochal and the common time. The unique design concepts in the decorative art of tomb walls and the deep cultural psychology and national character implied in the design are explained in order to benefit the development of modern design.First, based on comprehensive factors, the tree images in the tomb wall paintings of the Wei-Jin and North-South dynasties are divided into three stages in chronological order of development: the Sixteen Kingdoms of Wei-Jin,the Southern Dynasty and the Northern Dynasty, and the genealogy of the images is discussed.Secondly, tree images are comprehensive visual expressions based on multiple matrices.Considering the problematic preconceptions and framework construction, the collected historical data are summarized to sort out the matrices of tree images in tomb chamber murals retrospectively.According to the chronological order, they are divided into: first, primitive society: the basic need to promote the transformation of natural objects into artistic forms;second,Shang and Zhou to Qin dynasties: social needs gave rise to the metaphor of religious beliefs;third, the two Han dynasties: the concept of life and death conveys the visual language of imagination.Again, under the guidance of the design morphology analysis method, the tree images are systematically analyzed in four directions: line form, crown decoration, color language, layout structure, and intergenerational evolution of stylistic design style. Finally, under the guidance of symbolic analysis, the symbolic meaning of visual images is analyzed,i.e.,the symbolic meaning is classified: first, the tree images with symbols of ritual construction in Confucianism;second, the tree images with symbols of meditation and health in Taoism;third, the symbols of tree images are discussed from "sacred tree","immortal tree" to "immortal tree",The third is to discuss the evolution of tree symbols from "sacred trees" and "immortal trees" to "secular trees".Finally,we analyze the context of the birth of tree images in the tomb murals of the Wei,Jin and North and South Dynasties from the cultural background of the times. The integration and development of multiple ethnic groups and diverse ideologies are the main factors contributing to the evolution of tree images;we focus on the design features and ideographic functions of the tomb murals of the Wei,Jin and North and South Dynasties, revealing the ancient design concepts in the tomb murals and passing on and spreading the excellent culture.
