Cave 285 of Mogao Grottoes is the only cave in Dunhuang of the Northern Dynasty with an exact date.It has unshakable research value in Dunhuang grotto art.The mural paintings in the cave are rich in contents and themes,among which the south wall is the area where Buddhist story paintings are concentrated.The story painting of Five Hundred Robbers Becoming Buddhas painted in the center of the south wall is the most representative one.Because of the artistic characteristics of the mural blending Chinese and Western culture and its rarity,it is particularly precious."Five Hundred Robbers Become Buddhas" mainly tells the story of five hundred robbers who do a lot of evil,suffer a lot of punishment,and finally become five hundred Arhats after being influenced by Buddha.It has a positive significance of punishing evil and promoting good.This kind of core is in line with the value orientation of young people,so it is suitable to spread to young people and children.Through a multi-angle analysis of the origin story painting of Five Hundred Robbers Become Buddhas in Cave 285 of Mogao Grottoes,this research shows that the mural is unique and innovative in the field of painting ability,as there are few studies on this mural in the direction of illustration and picture books by predecessors,and the idea of "punish evil and promote good" in the central connotation of this mural has positive educational significance for children and adolescents.On the premise of the above innovation,we extract the elements that can be recreated and re-plan the story copy to make it conform to the modern readers’ way of thinking.In addition,following the design principles and performance characteristics of illustration picture books,combined with the psychological cognitive ability of teenagers and children,modern illustration picture books as the carrier,using reasonable composition forms,freehand illustration style and ink style color expression,to create illustration picture books with the theme of promoting the excellent culture of the Chinese nation and promoting the excellent ideology and morality of "punishing evil and promoting good".The design and research of the illustrated picture book Five Hundred Robbers Became Buddhas is a tribute to the culture and art of China’s Mogao Grottoes,which is expressed in the form of modern design.It also provides new ideas and forms for the development of Mogao Grottoes murals and other picture books themed on traditional Chinese culture,and also hopes to arouse the attention of reading groups and designers to the traditional Chinese culture.It is the better development and inheritance of Chinese excellent ideology and morality;At the same time,the content of the story also has the function of restraining the behavior of young people and children.It sets up the correct values of integrity and kindness,distinguishing good from evil and right from wrong for young people,and spreads to them the excellent Chinese ideological and moral character of "punishing evil and promoting good",which brings a positive effect that cannot be ignored on the growth and psychology of young people.
