Micro-lessons are the product of both new media technologies and the diverse needs of students in the modern era.Their emergence has effectively addressed the issues of traditional teaching methods being monotonous and inefficient.The current situation of English for Specific Purposes(ESP)courses is problematic,lacking scientific theoretical guidance and practical methods.Introducing micro-lessons into ESP teaching can help solve teaching difficulties and provide a path for the long-term development of ESP courses.This research aims to answer two questions: 1)What is the impact of designing and implementing micro-lessons in ESP courses on students’ learning in vocational schools? 2)How does designing and implementing micro-lessons in ESP courses impact teachers’ teaching in vocational schools?The research lasted seven months.Taking the computer English course for computer network application majors in Guangzhou Industry and Trade Technician College as an example,this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of designing and applying micro-lessons in ESP courses.Firstly,the teaching design and production of micro-lessons were completed.Secondly,the teaching experiment for the computer English course was conducted in two classes majoring in the computer network applications at a vocational school in Guangzhou,Guangdong Province,using micro-lesson teaching in the experimental class and traditional teaching in the controlled class.The pre-test and post-test results of the two classes were compared and analyzed.Questionnaires and interviews were also conducted to acquire the opinions of the students and teachers on micro-lessons.The study results show that the multi-modal micro-lessons have a positive impact on learning computer English,significantly affecting learning motivation and teaching methods.Specifically,micro-lessons can integrate professional background knowledge,create work contexts,and stimulate learning motivation.They can also prompt teachers to innovate teaching methods,changing the traditional inefficient teaching modes.Based on the research results,the following pedagogical implications are drawn:firstly,leverage the advantages of multi-modal teaching to develop systemic micro-lesson resources for ESP,laying a foundation for applying micro-lessons.Secondly,focus on the integration of language and professionalism,establish teaching objectives that can meet students’ specific needs for their professional development and employment.Finally,diversify teaching methods featuring language connotative and experiential learning,improving language cognition and application ability.
