A Report On E-C Translation Of Understanding Ageing For Nurses And Therapists(Chapter 4 And 5)

With the sustainable development of China’s society and the improvement of people’s living standards,life expectancy is getting longer and longer.At the same time,ageing population is becoming increasingly severe.According to the data of the National Health Commission,China is expected to enter a severe ageing society by2035.Therefore,optimizing the supply of elderly-care services in a more efficient way and reducing the pressure of social pension have become the priority of the government’s work in recent years.Understanding Ageing for Nurses and Therapists is a collection of academic papers on medical care for the older during their ageing process.This report excerpts the fourth and fifth chapters of this book as the original text of this translation practice in order to introduce relatively mature elderly-care practices abroad to domestic professionals,and make relevant parties to reflect on the current system and talent training status in this field,so as to make strategic preparation and talent reserves for China’s upcoming severely ageing society.Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model proposes two translation strategies including direct translation and oblique translation and seven translation methods from three aspects of lexicon,syntactic structure and message,which emphasizes the scientific,precise and detailed description of the relationship between the source text and the target text.And the source text of this translation practice project belongs to the informative text,which is characterized by objectivity,preciseness and logicality of the carried message.Therefore,Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model shows strong applicability to the translation of the source text.Under the guidance of Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model,the translator summarizes the specific features of the original text at the lexical and syntactic levels,and then analyzes the translation methods suitable for the conversion of each type of features.At the lexical level,the translator mainly adopts the translation methods including literal translation,borrowing,calque and transposition to deal with proper nouns,abstract nouns,technical terms and compound words.At the syntactic level,the translator mainly applies literal translation and modulation to solve the translation problems of complicated syntactic structures,such as passive sentences,attributive clauses,parallel structures and periodic sentences.Through this translation practice project,the instructive role of Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model in the translation of professional informative texts has been fully discussed,which is expected to provide some reference for the translation practice of similar text types in the future.
