| In any country, films and dramas about females’ growth in the context of urban life occupy an important position.2020 China’s TV series Nothing but Thirty, focusing on the emotional life of contemporary urban women, portrayed three women in their thirties and was well received by the market, triggering the empathy of the audiences. The American TV series Sex and The City, which also focused on women’s growth and emotional life, featured four single middle-aged women in Manhattan,New York,USA.Since its inception in 1998,Sex and The City has gained a great many of audiences and been filmed as a series until the final season released in 2003,spanning a six-year long.Although many scholars at home and abroad have conducted plenty of studies on the topic of Chinese and American views on love and marriage, there are really few studies that exert the perspective of Feminism and values as the theoretical basis to study the underlying causes for the differences and characteristics between Chinese and American romantic and marital values. Therefore, this paper will take the classic Chinese and American urban romance TV series Nothing but Thirty and Sex and The City as the objects of the present study, and carefully collect about 50 examples or dialogues from each of these two TV plays as textual analysis to summarize their differences on the views of love and marriage. On this foundation, the author explores the underlying causes of their differences. This thesis consists of six parts, chapter one of the paper contains the background of the study, the purpose and significance of the study, and the structure of the thesis.Chapter two is a literature review, which firstly gives a brief overview of the plots and characters of the classic Chinese and American urban romantic dramas;secondly introduces Feminism and its related studies, and finally presents the domestic and foreign research on the Chinese and American love and marriage values.Chapter three is the theoretical framework of the thesis, including Feminism and values.Chapter four is the focus of the paper, which compares and summarizes the differences on love and marriage values of the two TV dramas from the four dimensions(standards of spouse selection, purposes of love and marriage, position in family life and career development and attitudes towards sex and divorce).Chapter five is also the focus of the paper, which analyzes and interprets the causes of the differences in views on love and marriage of the two counties from the four influencing factors(political factor, economic factor, geographical environment factor, and ethical and moral factor)respectively.Chapter six is the conclusion of this paper, which summarizes the research results and findings, and then points out the limitations and future research directions of the thesis. In short,by selecting the two Chinese and American romantic TV series and their related texts, this paper presents a contrastive study of the love and marriage values manifested. At the same time,by using the perspective of Feminism and values, this paper aims to explore the differences and characteristics embodied in the views on love and marriage of the two countries and further investigate the primary causes for the differences in the values of the two countries. Here are two main reasons for such this research: first,to provide some new research perspectives in order to enrich the research of the two TV series, love and marriage and other related topics in China and the United States;second, based on the popular love TV series, this paper aims to accurately grasp the basic status of contemporary love and marriage in China and the U.S.,and analyzes in depth the causes of the differences in the Chinese and American love and marriage values. |
