| Light and shade are extremely important elements in a painting,creating a sense of volume and space in the picture while also creating a certain atmosphere in the picture.As the most basic form of artistic language expression and the compositional element of the picture,it bears the message of the object being expressed and has the role of a bridge and medium.Edward Hopper,as an American realist painter in the 20 th century,his emphasis on light and shadow in his paintings was inspired by the Impressionism and became the painting language to express emotions in his paintings;Bonnard,the last successor of the Impressionism,also showed his ingenuity in the form of light and shadow.In this paper,the study of light and shadow in Hopper and Bonnard’s works is mainly carried out from the following aspects: First,a brief summary of light and shadow in Art of Europe is made to pave the way.2、 Sort out the reasons for the formation of Hopper and Bonnard’s painting styles,and describe what kind of visual atmosphere they use light and shadow to create.3、 Analyzing and summarizing the artistic forms of light and shadow presented in the works of Hopper and Bonnard,both of which have their own characteristics when dealing with light and shadow,provides a good starting point for this study.Elaborate on personal creative ideas,observe individual external reactions in daily life,and provide new ideas and perspectives on the emotional expression of light and shadow in oil painting creation.By using local materials and exploring real-life situations,emotional expression of objective objects and inner emotions is achieved through personalized perspectives and artistic forms.This paper adopts five methods for research: literature research,historical research,case study,and comparative analysis.On the basis of inheriting the research results of previous scholars,I hope to sort out the laws of their handling of images,and from a more conscious and essential internal level-artistic expression and artistic effects,to elaborate on the importance of light and shadow in their images.And it is concluded that light and shadow,as an indispensable part of their images,have become a medium for expressing self-awareness. |
