The application of 1ight and shadow has been playing the key role in the oil painting history. Because the different time's painters have different understanding and utilization to light and shadow, light and shadow has the different manifestation on pictorial representation. From the Renaissance, The painters analyzed the variation rules of light and shadow based on the scientific approaches, simulated the stereoscopic impression of images on the two-dimensional surface by use of light and shadow, and further exhibited the spatial aspects of paintings. At the period of impressionism, the painters broke through the limits, exhibiting light just by light and dark and using complementary color and reflection of light in order to exhibit ample color variety of the image and brightness of pictures. At the present time, light and shadow have become an independent element of pictures and a constituent part of aesthetics. The utilization of light and shadow is performing the important role in oil painting. Light and shadow can display the stereoscopic impression of image, the spatial prospective, and the composition of picture frame. Light and shadow can also heighten atmosphere of picture, express individual emotion of painters, and emphasize a subject. The different artists have different experience and understanding to light and shadow, therefore they prove the different expression form and effect on picture frame. By means of exploration to light and shadow, the painters can make more choices on the composition of picture frame and space, which further promote the development of drawing language.Application of light and shadow in La Tour's drawings is a subjective representation. In La Tour's paintings, both exterior light and interior light are a kind of composition of relations based on subjective application to light. La Tour devoted light to symbolism in his paintings, exhibited framework of pictures, stabilized center of gravity of layouts, generalized the shape of image to geometrical form in order to cut apart pictures, changed less picture hue, regionalized the flat surface of light and shadow, which endow picture with intense form, decorative meaning, reflection of cubism and mysterious religion atmosphere. We explore expression methods of subjective 1ight and shadow in La Tout's painting works through the development course of 1ight and shadow, which make people further understand the subjectivity of 1ight and shadow in La Tour's paintings and know completely the art of 1ight and shadow. In this thesis, we will discuss the subjective expression of light and shadow in La Tour's paintings in detail through four chapters by explaining the concept, function and development of 1ight and shadow, integrating a great amount of information of art history, combining with the characteristics of light and shadow in La Tour's paintings, and using these methods of theoretical analysis, exemplification, comparison. The first chapter will discuss 1ight and shadow in western paintings. And we compared La Tour's paintings to Caravaggio's and Rembrandt's Paintings in order to find the characteristic of subjectivity in La Tour's works; The fourth chapter will expound the influence and significance of the art of 1ight and shadow in La Tout'paintings combining with the art characteristic of cubism school, which enables the people to understand more about the processing modernity of 1ight and shadow in La Tour drawings and the influence on the modern art..In this thesis, we analyzed and compared the use of 1ight and shadow in La Tour'paintings in order to understand completely and deeply his art. The outstanding artist of light and shadow brought a new atmosphere for the traditional realistic art of 17th century. La Tout's painting works have the characteristic of realistic art, modern element of cubism and unique effect of light and shadow, which are worth understanding in depth. La Tour is unfortunate since his art has been buried for three centuries. But La Tour was also lucky because he was discovered by the people after all and was evaluated appropriately and was endowed with the status in art history. In the 17th century, the classicism occupied mainstream status in painting history, so it was very commendable that La Tour's paintings displayed the unique form of 1ight and shadow and the trend of cubism subjectively.
