Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack(taste)’ refers to one’s ability to feel, recognise, judge and appreciate food and drink, works of art, natural scenery, morality and social etiquette, but also to the ability to maintain an appropriate distance from one’s own preferences and group in these areas. The concept of ‘Geschmack’ refers not only to one’s ability to distinguish and discriminate between the details of things, but also to one’s preference for certain things. The purpose of Gadamer’s examination and analysis of the history of the concept of ‘Geschmack’’in Truth and Method is not only to collect what has been handed down to it from its original connotation,to bring back the understanding of the concept of ‘Geschmack’ to the Western It is also to point out how the subjective predisposition that Kant gave to the concept of‘Geschmack’ influenced the humanities(Geisteswissenschaften),and thus to criticise the inapplicability of the modern scientific method in the humanities.By examining the crisis of Western humanism and critiquing Kant’s adaptation of the concept of ‘Geschmack’,Gadamer ultimately calls for a return to the Western humanist tradition for the humanities. It can therefore be said that the transformation of the concept of ‘Geschmack’ by Kantian aesthetics and the crisis of Western humanism constitute the context in which Gadamer’s concept of‘Geschmack’ was formed. The aesthetic connotations of Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack’ are twofold. On the one hand,Gadamer’s analysis of the history of the concept of ‘Geschmack’ is a reflection on the aesthetic connotation of the concept of ‘Geschmack’;on the other hand,it is a reflection on the idea of ‘aesthetics without distinction’.The idea of ‘aesthetics without distinction’.One of the epistemological connotations of Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack’ is a continuation of the epistemological connotations of the past concept of ‘Geschmack’,emphasising that ‘Geschmack’ is an act of resourcefulness that serves the requirements of self-understanding in the humanities. The requirement of self-understanding.The second epistemological connotation of Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack’ is a reinterpretation of the concept of ’intuition’,and points out that the recovery of artistic truth requires the escape of the false notion that intuition is linked to sensual immediacy. The practical connotation of Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack’ is the assertion that ‘Geschmack’ is the highest realisation of moral judgement, and the assertion of Aristotle’s position of ‘practical wisdom’.The significance of Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack’ for artistic truth lies in its contribution to the transformation of aesthetics into a question of artistic experience and the emphasis on the subjectivity of the artwork. The humanist significance of Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack’ lies first and foremost in its reaffirmation of the truth of art and in its rejection of the past use of the concept of ‘Geschmack’ in Kantian aesthetics in relation to the concepts of ‘common sense’ and ‘judgment’.Gadamer’s concept of ‘Geschmack’ is part of Gadamer’s answer to the problem of understanding in the humanities.Gadamer’s concept of‘Geschmack’ is part of Gadamer’s answer to the problem of understanding in the humanities, and also helps Gadamer to articulate a view of truth that differs from the conception of natural science.
