The Study On The Feasting Poems Of Tang Yuanhe Poets

A banquet means a gathering of guests with wine and food or a gathering of people to drink.Since ancient times,banqueting has always had a specific social function and significance,so naturally the poems written by poets about banqueting have a unique value.During the Yuanhe period of the Tang dynasty,there were many famous poets and literati who gathered frequently for banquets and produced a large number of poems about banquets and drinking.These poems record the poets’ banqueting interactions and reveal the unique banqueting style of the Tang dynasty.This article explores the unique value of these poems,taking as its subject the banqueting poems written by poets active in the Yuanhe period,with a view to exploring the ideological content,banqueting culture,emotional meaning and artistic value of the poets’ banqueting poems.In addition to the introduction,this paper is divided into five chapters.The introductory chapter explains the origin of the topic,the object,purpose and significance of the study,the current state of research on the subject of banqueting,and the research methodology of the paper.The first chapter explores the origins of feasting and drinking poetry and sorts out the historical trajectory of its development.The earliest banqueting poems can be traced back to the Poetic Edda,which showcased the ritual and music culture of the Zhou dynasty and expressed the pursuit of good virtue in society at the time.During the Jian’an period,the appearance of public banquet poetry marked the emergence of banquet poetry as a separate poetic subject.During the Northern and Southern Dynasties,the poetry of feasting and drinking became more abundant in quantity and gradually matured as it intersected with the poetry of landscapes and public banquets.By the Yuanhe period of the Tang dynasty,social conditions were prosperous and stable,and a social culture of ’feasting must be accompanied by poetry’ had gradually developed,and the creation of feast poetry was already flourishing.During the Yuanhe period,under the influence of official encouragement and the pleasure of the scholars,banqueting poetry flourished,with a greater focus on individual lives in terms of content,and an expansion of genres to include accompanying banquets and choral banqueting poems,presenting a unique style.The second chapter focuses on the types of banquets in the poetry of the poets of the Tang Yuanhe period.Firstly,there are the pleasure banquets,which include both public banquets with certain political purposes and more liberal private banquets,showing the role that banquets played in the interactions of Tang scholars.Secondly,there are the festive banquets,including those at the Zhonghe Festival,the Shangsi Festival and the Chongyang Festival,reflecting the festive style of the Tang dynasty.Finally,there are the farewell banquets,in which the poet bids farewell to his friends and relatives,and gives poems at banquets to express his parting thoughts.The poems of the poets of Yuanhe faithfully record the interactions of the literati of the Tang dynasty,reflecting the social and humanistic moods of the Tang dynasty.The third chapter focuses on the banqueting culture reflected in the banqueting poems of the Yuanhe poets.The Tang dynasty was a time of great feasting and drinking,and the poems of the Yuanhe poets show a rich variety of cultural phenomena,focusing on the culture of song and dance and the culture of drinking.It is clear from the poems that there were two types of song and rhyme: those composed by literati and those written by the various religious houses;and dances that drew heavily on Western civilisation,with dances such as the Tsuge and Huteng becoming popular.The games were also very popular,including the chip order,the dice plate order and the tossing order,which were closely combined with music and produced many tossing music pieces of a game nature.The singing and dancing performances and the drinking games greatly enlivened the atmosphere of the feast,reflecting the prosperous social atmosphere and freedom of enjoyment of the Tang Dynasty,and demonstrating the open and tolerant thinking and artistic creativity of the Tang people.The fourth chapter discusses the emotional connotations of the poets’ banqueting poems in Tang Yuanhe.The poet’s feast poems are rich in emotional connotations,as he expresses his emotions in an open manner.These can be divided into three areas,namely,the relaxation of freedom and leisure,the sense of life as time passes,and the bitterness of a difficult career path and lack of talent.The fifth chapter is a case study of the feasting poetry of the Yuanhe poets.Amongst the many poets of the Yuanhe the poetic world,the banqueting poems of Meng Jiao,Bai Juyi and Liu Yuxi are typical and representative,not only in terms of the number of poems they produced,but also in terms of their individual artistic characteristics.Meng Jiao,an important figure in the Han-Meng school of poetry,is a master of refinement of phraseology,and is very subtle in his descriptions of the banqueting environment.Liu Yuxi is independent of the the Han-Meng and Yuan-Bai Schools of Poetry,and is adept at using the transformations of the banqueting space to open up the poetic landscape,while at the same time developing rich associations and imagery from the banqueting,making it unique in its romantic and delicate sentiments.Their distinctive banqueting poems show the artistic pursuits of the poets from different perspectives,and express the colourful artistic style of the Yuanhe poetic world.This section analyses and examines their poems on banqueting,which will help to grasp the overall characteristics and artistic value of the poets’ banqueting poetry.
