Research On Zhang Guangyu’s Artistic Characters In The Early 20th Century

This paper attempts to analyze how Zhang Guangyu interpenetrated,fused and generated traditional Chinese culture and folk art with Western modern design in the 20th century by compiling and summarizing his works of art characters designed by him.Zhang Guangyu was engaged in many fields of art and design throughout his life,including painting,advertising design,packaging design,stage art,comics,and animated films.The author focuses his research on the design of art characters in his artistic creation history,refining the techniques of the East and the West on the one hand,and analyzing his style of art character design on the other hand to draw conclusions related to Zhang Guangyu’s design thinking.From this,we understand how Zhang Guangyu used both Eastern and Western art techniques to reflect the fusion and innovation of traditional Chinese culture and modern Western art forms in that era,and then obtained design methods and thinking,which eventually guided the output of font creation.In the process of the study,the author has also supplemented and improved the focus of this study from other aspects: first,the author summarizes Zhang Guangyu’s design concepts in the context of his historical background and his work history;second,the author develops Zhang Guangyu’s design concepts in the context of his design techniques and his design style,especially focusing on the use of seal carving chapters in Zhang Guangyu’s art characters.The third is to summarize and present Zhang Guangyu’s design methods and design thinking.To sum up,this paper conducts a comprehensive and in-depth study and analysis of Zhang Guangyu’s artistic activities through documentary research,comparative analysis,and physical image examination,and explores the design methods and design thinking worth learning and continuing in Zhang Guangyu’s font design history.The precious value of Zhang Guangyu’s art characters is embedded in his art character designs that embody the inclusive,modern departure from Chinese culture,as well as the value of traditional culture and humanism.Zhang Guangyu intermingles the oriental imagery of traditional culture with the formal language of Western modernism,unlike the obsessive Westernization of that era,and transforms Chinese characters into designs without losing the essence and oriental aesthetics of Chinese origin.It is precisely because of his good technical foundation and professionalism,his accumulation of traditional culture and folk art,and his interdisciplinary and holistic conception that he made a remarkable contribution to early Chinese graphic design,and has extremely important lessons for future generations.
