| The family is an important classroom in the education of adolescents.China has always had a fine tradition of emphasizing family education and passing on family traditions.Family stories are an important way of family education and family tradition inheritance.Studies have shown that family stories are of great significance to the ideological and moral growth and maintenance of mental health of adolescents. Therefore, this study will analyze family stories and their relationship with mental health in the context of Chinese culture,so as to provide inspiration for rural parents to apply family stories to carry out family style education and mental health education for adolescent children. This study combines qualitative research and quantitative research to understand the cultural characteristics and basic situation of family stories from the perspective of parents and children in Chinese rural adolescent families, and then analyze the impact of family stories on adolescents’ mental health and its internal mechanism.First,a qualitative research on family stories from the perspective of 22 groups of rural adolescents and their parents in H Town,Hubei Province was carried out by using the method of consensus qualitative research(CQR).The study found that the content related to family stories can be divided into seven domains under the dual perspective:narrative frequency of family stories, narrative situation, narrative style, narrative motivation, content theme, experience and role, and children’s attitudes in family stories. The research shows that family stories are generally carried out in the families of rural adolescents. The specific manifestations are:(1)Sparse and ordinary, and the frequency of telling family stories is more or less.(2)There are joys and sorrows, and the content and themes of family stories are relatively rich, including stories of parents and children, among which there are stories of beauty, glory and hardship.(3)Consciously or unintentionally, family stories take place in both deliberate and non-deliberate educational situations.(4)Serious and relaxed. There are different ways to tell family stories, mainly including three types of narrative ways: relaxed and happy, peaceful and serious.(5)Looking forward to it,family stories always contain educational motives, and parents mostly consider their children’s learning, morality, living behavior habits, fun sharing, physical health and safety protection.(6)Moisturize things with sound.Family stories have many influences on children, mainly the subtle influences on cognition, emotion and behavior.(7)Children have positive attitudes towards family stories, such as liking to listen, curious, inquiring, and sharing.Based on the results of the qualitative research,a family story questionnaire was compiled, and a questionnaire survey was conducted among 712 rural adolescents and their parents in H Town,Hubei Province,to further understand the basic situation of family stories.Through a descriptive analysis of the status quo of family stories from the perspective of 712 rural adolescents and their parents,we further learned:(1)Family stories are generally told in rural adolescent families, but the overall telling frequency is not high, and there are also very few families who do not tell.(2)The telling situations of family stories in the families of rural teenagers are mainly the situations of deliberate education.(3)The way of telling family stories is mostly peaceful, relaxed and happy in daily life.(4)The narrative motivation of family stories is closely related to children’s learning and life behavior habits, but the narrative motivation of sharing fun has not attracted the attention of parents.(5)Among the content themes of family stories, the difficult and hard family stories are mostly the hard times of the older generation, and the beautiful and glorious stories mainly focus on the interesting things about children.(6)Children’s emotional attitudes such as "like to listen to" and "curiosity" towards family stories are more significant than behavioral attitudes such as "inquiring" and "sharing".(7)Family stories have a profound impact on children’s cognition, emotion, and behavior, especially implicit cognitive changes and explicit behavioral changes are more prominent. In order to analyze the influence of family stories on adolescents’ mental health and its internal mechanism, the seven aspects of family stories were used as independent variables, and the subjective well-being and depression reflecting the mental health status of rural adolescents were used as dependent variables to conduct multiple regression analysis. The results show that the democratic way of telling family stories,non-deliberate educational situations, positive emotional attitudes, cognitive changes, and emotional enrichment have significant positive effects on adolescents’ mental health. In order to clarify the mechanism of family stories on the mental health of rural adolescents, this study further explored the mediating effect of self-concept clarity and self-esteem on the basis of multiple regression analysis. In this study, family stories were used as independent variables,self-concept clarity and self-esteem as mediator variables, and mental health as dependent variables.Amos24.0 was used to construct a parallel multiple mediation model. The results show that the mediating effects of self-esteem and self-concept clarity are significant, and the two mediators indirectly and positively affect the mental health of rural adolescents.Based on the above research results, guided by the theory of social ecological system, the countermeasures and suggestions for "family-school-community" to carry out family story activities are put forward: first, optimize the family microsystem for family story activities. The second is to create a system in the school’s family story education classroom. The third is to build a social system that emphasizes the development of family stories. It provides inspiration for the educational function of family stories to improve the mental health of adolescents, and also provides a reference for parents to better carry out family story activities for family education. |
