A Report On The Translation Of Sociological Text Data Feminism (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Translation Shift Theory

This report presents an English-Chinese translation practice with its source texts consisting of Introduction and Chapter One from Data Feminism.This book focuses on how the intersectionality of gender,race and class affects and shapes the data-driven society.At the same time,the book delves into how data can perpetuate power structures and analyzes the beneficiaries of such power through numerous examples.Data Feminism is a kind of informative text in sociology.It is essential to accurately convey the original information,and make sure the translation is consistent with the pragmatic habits of the target language.At the lexical level,the source text includes numerous professional terms and nominalization structures,which poses challenges to the translation.At the syntactic level,the challenge exists in rendering lengthy sentences which feature compact structure and complex logical relations.Therefore,the translator has adopted Catford’s translation shift theory as a guiding principle,solving these difficulties,such as supplementing words or phrases,converting voices and meanings,preposing attributives and changing the part of speech of words with the methods of level shifts and category shifts.By applying these techniques,the quality of translation has improved;the intended meaning of the source text has been conveyed accurately and effectively to the target readers.Through specific examples,this report illustrates that Catford’s translation shift theory is highly applicable in guiding the translation of sociological texts.It is suggested that translators should adopt appropriate translation strategies to produce a translation that is easy for readers to understand.
