As an ancient painting material language,tempera has a unique traditional accumulation and charm.From the Middle Ages to modern times,tempera’s media has also changed from the embodiment of divinity to the expression of individual spirit by artists.Nowadays,more and more artists use tempera to create,and artists also inject their own ideas and concepts into this traditional material in the process of creation.Norwegian artist Lars Elling,as a tempera painter who stands out in contemporary art,is deeply rooted in people’s hearts with her dreamlike unique picture effect and dramatic style.The purpose of this paper is to take Lars Elling as an example,and take the timeline of the artist’s creations as a guide to analyze his different ideas and diverse picture characteristics in three different periods by using tempera,and to analyze the ideological changes behind his pictures and the pursuit of the times in his works.This paper is mainly divided into three chapters.The first chapter starts with the analysis of tempera works since the second half of the 20 th century,thinking about the expression transformation of materials and how it can be expressed by modern and contemporary painters,thus introducing Lars Elling’s choice of tempera’s media.The second chapter will start with the time line of painter’s creations,and analyze the changes of artistic style and tempera’s characteristics in Elling’s three periods from a single abstract element to multiple narrative collages to emotional continuation and development,and think about the fusion of media and the transformation of ideas behind it.The third chapter will talk about the influence of Lars Elling on the use of contemporary tempera paintings,think about tempera’s artistic development and innovation at present,and discuss the process from imitating Irene to personal language formation in my tempera creations.
