This is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The source text is selected from the book the Fire and Flood: A People’s History of Climate Change,from 1979 to the Present published in 2022,authored by American writer Eugene Linden from the US.In this translation practice,the translator translates chapters one to five of the book.The translation practice report is divided into five parts.The report begins with the background information about the translation practice,the book and the author,as well as the meaning of the translation and the structure of the report.The following part mainly describes translation steps in this translation practice,including the preparation before translation,translation process,and editing after translation.Two main chapters of the report analyze the difficulties encountered in the translation practice,and the translator applies corresponding translation methods to solve these problems.In the translation practice,there are two main difficulties which lie in lexical and syntactic aspects.Lexical difficulties include the translation of proper nouns and polysemous words.The translator employs translation methods such as annotation,conversion,and semantic choice to solve these problems.The syntactical difficulties are mainly found in the translation of attributive clauses and complex sentences,and the methods of linear translation,restructuring,and division can cope with the corresponding difficulties.In the fifth chapter,the translator summarizes the achievements,experiences and limitations of the translation practice,and puts forward some suggestions for future translation work.In this translation practice,the translator has a deeper understanding of the translation of information texts.In order to accurately convey the information and content of the source text,the translator has been accumulating relevant translation experience,so as to prepare the ground for better translation of climate environment texts in the future.In conclusion,this translation practice is of great significance to help the translator improve translation abilities.
