A Report On Translation Of Bomb Shelter(Excerpt)from The Perspective Of The Context Theory

Since the 21^st century,the number of global biographical literature has grown rapidly,but little research has been done on introducing outstanding foreign biographical literature in China,and the“bringing in”of biographical works needs to be strengthened compared with its“going out”.Based on this consideration,the present translation practice takes the latest biography Bomb Shelter by Mary Laura Philpott,the best-selling American memoir writer,as the object of abridged translation.It can help readers develop a positive world view and promote intercultural communication and understanding,which has great influence on readers.This report,taking into account the linguistic,literary and cultural difficulties and problems encountered in the translation process and analyzing specific cases,takes context theory as the guide and addresses how it can help translators to reproduce the style and characteristics of biographical literature with a view to providing reference for future translation practice of biography.Context theory entails linguistic context,situational context and cultural context.In translating,linguistic context analysis can ensure the translation’s accuracy and coherence.Situational context analysis is conducive to vividly restoring the situation,better portraying the characters,expressing the author’s attitude and emotion from the side,and thus satisfying the requirements of literary translation.Cultural context analysis copes with difficulties caused by cultural differences such as religious terms,idioms,colloquialism and other culture-specific items.Under the guidance of context theory,the translator tries to translate the original text with translation techniques such as addition,omission,combination,separation and shift,striving to achieve equivalence at all levels.It’s found that the context theory is highly applicable to reproducing the linguistic characteristics of such biographical literature with a complex plot as Bomb Shelter.It can not only grasp the style of the translation as a whole,but also serve as a guide at different stages and levels of translation.
