Due to the rapid development of urbanisation and the transition from secondary to tertiary industries, there are many abandoned and derelict industrial buildings in the old city.Due to the long years of construction, the public service facilities, public activity spaces and social environment in the old urban areas are now increasingly obvious and unable to meet the daily production and living needs of the residents. This thesis takes the "Activity Centre for Residents of Mengzi Railway District" as a specific research object, combining abandoned industrial buildings with the public activity space of the district through the redevelopment of the unused urban space. The thesis discusses and analyses the spatial layout, functional distribution, traffic flow, crowd activities and community management of the community’s public activity space, based on the social, cultural, sports and leisure needs of the residents, and discusses the functional composition and humanised design of the public space as part of the urban regeneration process. The study will provide effective strategies and solutions for solving the problems of public space, regenerating old neighbourhoods and revitalising the city’s historical memory. The interior design of the residents’ activity centre will be based on people’s needs, using old industrial buildings to transform them into a residents’ activity centre, picking up cultural memories and achieving a spatial narrative. The interior design of the centre is based on people’s needs. The report also explores the relationship between the components of public activity spaces and the needs of residents in the redevelopment of old communities, and summarises general design strategies to provide some ideas and pointers for future theories on the interior design of residents’ activity centres in old communities.
