Objective:This study focuses on the theory of body and spirit from The Inner Canon of Huangdi(hereinafter referred to as The Inner Canon)and Li Dongyuan, and hopes to summarize Lee’s inheritance and development of the The Inner Canon from the point of the theory of body and spirit through the discussion of their connotations.Taking children’s tic disorder(traditional Chinese medicine disease name:chronic infantile convulsion)as an example,it will explore the modern treatment of body and spirit related diseases. This study is aim to benefit the research of body and spirit theory in traditional Chinese medicine and the clinical diagnosis and treatment of body and spirit related diseases. Methods:This study focuses on literature research, combining visual display of knowledge graph and data mining of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions,to explore the connotation and application of the theory of body and spirit.Results:(1)In the study of the concept of body and spirit in The Inner Canon,it can be concluded that the Inner Canon holds the view that the spirit is born under the condition of body and Qi.Blood and Qi are the foundation of the existence of the spirit. The Qi of the five internal organs is the preconditions for existence of emotions, such as joy, anger, sadness, and fear.At the same time, spirit dominates the body and Qi,and the emphasis on spirit in the Inner Canon is reflected in health preservation and disease prevention and treatment. In the internal organs of the human body, the spleen and stomach are the foundation of the granary, nourishing the Qi of the five internal organs. The spleen and stomach are also controlled by the spirit, and emotional disorders lead to spleen and stomach disorders.(2)In the study of Li Dongyuan’s outlook on body and spirit,it can be concluded that Li Dongyuan focused on the two major pathogenic factors, that is diet and labor. From the point of internal injury to the spleen and stomach,he believed that the spleen and stomach was the source of vitality, and internal injury to the spleen and stomach resulted in deficiency of vitality and spirit. He established a trinity of body,Qi and spirit in which Qi is the root of body and spirit.Influenced by the theory of Qi monism and the war background at that time,Lee attached particular importance to the role of vitality, taking the imbalance of Qi and fire as an important mechanism of pathogenesis, and proposed the theory of Yin fire.Yin fire is actually a fire of internal injury, caused by the depletion of blood and vitality.(3)From Lee’s exploration of the inheritance and development of the concept of body and spirit in The Inner Canon,it can be concluded that Lee’s citation of the Plain Questions accounts for 45.68%of the total chapter content in the Plain Questions, and Lee’s citation of the Miraculous Pivot accounts for 23.46%of the total chapter content in the Miraculous Pivot.Through a specific analysis of the articles cited,it can be concluded that Lee inherited the idea of valuing the spirit in the Inner Canon and believed that the value of health preservation lies in regulating the spirit;Inheriting the idea of valuing the soil phase in The Inner Canon,Lee further proposed that all diseases originate from the spleen and stomach, with a particular emphasis on the spleen and stomach in the treatment of body;Lee emphasized the role of Qi in the body and spirit, improved the treatment of spleen and stomach diseases, and emphasized the maintenance of body fluid. He believed that body fluid was the foundation of spiritual preservation,so he emphasized the use of herbs with bitter flavor and cold nature, sweet flavor and cold nature, and sour flavor in the treatment to remove pathogenic fire and maintain body fluid.(4)According to the clinical application of the theory of body and spirit,Li Dongyuan discussed the treatment of chronic infantile convulsion from the perspective of reducing wood and tonifying soil, and reducing fire and tonifying metal, taking Strengthening the soil phase as the foundation. He commonly used drugs including Officinal Magnolia Bark,Rhizoma Coptidis,Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae,Ginseng,Radix Bupleuri,Chinese Angelica,Poria Cocos,Astragalus Membranaceus,Ephedra,Medicated Leaven, and Largetrifoliolious Bugbane Rhizome. The natures of the medicine are mainly warm, cold, and neutral while the flavors are mainly spicy, bitter, and sweet. The meridian tropism is mainly focused on the spleen, stomach, and lung.Professor Li Lixin inherits Li Dongyuan’s ideas of tonifying deficiency and strengthening the spleen and stomach. He also attaches great importance to regulating the spirit and nourishing the liver and kidney. He commonly uses Ootheca Mantidis,Sharpleaf Galangal Fruit,White Paeony Root,Haliotidis Concha,Chrysanthemum Flower,Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis,Cicadae Periostracum,Bombyx Batryticatus,Acorus Tatarinowii,Polygalae Radix,Pinellia ternata Breit,Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim,Curcumae Radix,Finger Citron Fruit,Radix Bupleuri,Sichuan lovase rhizome,Common Clubmoss Herb,Chinese Angelica, salvia miltiorrhiza. The natures of the medicine are mainly cold, warm, and neutral while the flavors are mainly spicy, bitter, and sweet. The meridian tropism is mainly focused on the liver and lung. Conclusion:This study is based on the concept of body and spirit.Through the in-depth analysis of Lee’s theory of body and spirit, this study is aim to clarify its inheritance and development of the theory of body and spirit in The Inner Canon, which has certain reference significance for innovative research in traditional Chinese medicine theory.Since The Inner Canon appeared, the theory of the trinity of body,Qi,and spirit has been established. On the basis of the theory of body,Qi,and spirit in The Inner Canon,Li Dongyuan further proposed that Qi is the root of body and spirit. This led to an in-depth analysis of spleen, stomach, and vatality, and further gave birth to the theory of spleen and stomach, and promoted the innovation of traditional Chinese medicine. The clinical research section takes children with tic disorder(traditional Chinese medicine disease name:chronic infantile convulsion)as an example to explore the treatment of diseases related to body and spirit, which can provide a reference for clinical treatment of such diseases.Based on the summary of Li Dongyuan’s treatment experience and the data mining of Chinese medicine prescriptions,it can be concluded that in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of body and spirit related diseases,Li Dongyuan paid attention to regulating the spleen and stomach, with a particular emphasis on regulating Qi.Contemporary physician Li Lixin inherits Lee’s thought of strengthening the soil phase and focuses on regulating the spirit, tonifying the liver and kidney, thus developing the treatment of body and spirit related diseases. In summary, the body and spirit theory of traditional Chinese medicine should be well applied, with spirit regulation as the priority,Qi regulation as the key,and body regulation as the foundation. The body regulation,Qi regulation, and spirit regulation should be integrated throughout the treatment.
