A Report On E-C Translation Of Business News Under The Guidance Of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory

With the continuous and in-depth development of economic globalization,news websites have become important platforms for information exchanges at home and abroad.Since business news can comprehensively show the operating status and development trends of enterprises,the translation of business news can help domestic enterprises keep abreast of the development of foreign enterprises in the same industry.During the internship period,the author participated in the Tsingtao Brewery Co.International Media Daily Monitoring project,which focused on the translation of business news related to the beer industry.This translation practice report is based on this project.Nominalized structures,passive structures,professional terms,and long and difficult sentences are commonly seen in business news,and their translation is the key difficulty in this translation practice.In the translation process,the author wants to convey the message of the original texts completely while ensuring that the translation is fluent and standardized.In order to achieve this goal,the author resorts to Catford’s translation shifts theory to deal with the problems that may be encountered.This report studies the translation practice from lexical and syntactic aspects,analyzes various shifts occurring in the translation process,and discusses how to solve various translation problems through level shifts and category shifts of the theory to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation.In terms of level shifts,the author takes full account of the differences between English and Chinese grammar and vocabulary,and converts grammatical changes in English to words or phrases in Chinese through level shifts to make them conform to the Chinese language norms.In the aspect of category shifts,the author addresses the difficulties and problems encountered in the translation process from the following three aspects:firstly,the author uses structure shifts to solve the problems caused by the differences in the use of active and passive voices,the expression of positive and negative meanings and the position of attributives between English and Chinese.Secondly,the author shifts static English sentences into dynamic Chinese sentences by class shifts,completing the flexible shifts between English adjectives,nouns and Chinese verbs to make them in line with the reading habits of Chinese readers.Thirdly,the author adopts the translation strategy of unit shifts to find other levels of linguistic units in the target language corresponding to the source language,so as to achieve meaning equivalence between the source text and the target text.This report illustrates the application of translation strategies and methods contained in Catford’s theory in business news translation with practical examples.The author hopes to clarify the guiding role of the theory in the translation of business news texts,enrich the translation methods and case studies in the field of business news,and provide reference for other translators in their translation of related texts and assist them in applying translation shifts theory flexibly in their translation practice.
