Scholarly studies of the reception history of Tao Yuanming’s poetry have mostly focused on exploring the poet’s study and simulation of Tao Yuanming’s poetry in the context of poetry theory. In fact, the selection process of Tao’s poems by successive selectors in the history is also an important part of the acceptance of Tao’s poems.By making selections or commentaries on Tao’s poems, they demonstrate their own poetic thought and aesthetic orientation of the times. This article provides a linear overview of the phenomenon of anthologizing Tao Yuanming’s poetry in the pre-Ming period(from the Southern Liang Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty). The aim is to reveal the unique perceptions of Tao poetry’s linguistic style and creative techniques,as well as the relationship between internal inheritance and development,in the selected Tao poems of different time periods and different selectors. This dissertation is going to examine the phenomenon of Tao poetry selections in five parts. The introductory section introduces the significance of this dissertation’s topic and the current state of research in the academic community, and incidentally introduces the research methodology and innovations of this dissertation The object of the thesis research is conceptually defined. The study is based on the phenomenon of anthology of Tao Yuanming’s poetry, and the changes in the poetic thinking and aesthetic interests of the time from the perspective of anthology can help to grasp the changes in the status of Tao’s poetry in the history of poetry in different eras. The research in this area is still in its infancy, lacking in systematization, and still needs to be expanded in terms of innovation,so there is still much room for research. The main part of the dissertation consists of three chapters, each of which follows the chronological order, giving an account of the selected Tao poems, revealing the characteristics and exploring the reasons for them, and summarizing the stage pattern. The first chapter deals with the phenomenon of selected poems of Tao Yuanming from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Tang Dynasty. The two anthologies,Wen Xuan and Yutai Xinyong, are observed to have their own characteristics in terms of the critical color of Tao’s poems, but behind the differences are there commonalities, namely, the grasp of emotional strength and direction under the literary trend of pushing for new changes. In the Tang Dynasty, there were no selected Tao poems in the anthology,so we turned to observe the characteristics of the three classical books, namely,Yiwen Leiju,Chuxueji, and Suihua Jili,as well as the selected Tao poems by Shi Ge.We found that the Tang people took the deep requirement of the body and the edge of emotion, and both the way of collecting Xiu lines in the classical books and the form of criticism of excerpted lines by Shi Ge were the rediscovery of the natural imagery of Tao poems and the excavation of the beauty of their mood. This chapter outlines the paradigm shift from the Southern Dynasty’s focus on Tao Yuanming’s image as a hermit to the aesthetic paradigm of Tao poetry, but always with the word "emotion" in mind. The second chapter focuses on the phenomenon of anthologizing Tao Yuanming’s poetry in the Song Dynasty. The main object of this study is to compare the number of selected poems and the content of their titles, and to examine the new trends in the acceptance of Tao’s poems by Song Dynasty readers. It is concluded that the anthology of Tao poems in the Song Dynasty was developed around two hidden lines of the Jiangxi poetry school and Neo-Confucianism,and that the poems in Zhuzhuang Shihua and Shi Lin Guangji were centered on the development and perfection of the Jiangxi poetry style, and the natural aesthetic value of Tao poems was promoted through the anthology of Tao poems. In particular,Shi Lin Guangji had enshrined Tao Yuanming as the patriarch of poets in the construction of poetry history. It had completed the classical status of Tao poetry from the poetics perspective.Wenzhang Zhengzhong uses the concept of Neo-Confucianism to select and record Tao poems, completing the classicization of Tao’s poetry. The third chapter examines the phenomenon of selecting and recording Tao Yuanming’s poems in the Yuan Dynasty.Focusing on the Wenxuan Buyi by Chen Renzi in the late Song and early Yuan dynasties and the Xuanshi Buzhu by Liu lu in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties.this paper focuses on the influence of the identity of the relics on the selection of Tao poems in the the Wenxuan Buyi.this paper digs into the issue of the selectors of the Xuanshi Buzhu and the characteristics of the fusion of sentiment and poetic teaching in the selection and recording process. In the end,It turned out that the process of selecting and recording Tao poems in the Yuan Dynasty was actually a process of transformation of the scholars into scholars who were impregnated with the science, and Tao poems became the carrier of the ultimate ideal of "poetry to carry the Dao".The concluding remarks are based on the previous discussions, linking the selected poems of Tao Yuanming in various anthologies before the Ming Dynasty,as well as in individual books and poetry books, summarizing the relationship and evolutionary trajectory between the selected poems of Tao Yuanming in different dynasties.
