| Taking modernity as the base of literary criticism, this paper attempts to systematize and structure the study of He Xiaomei and her literary works in different stages. In addition to using the common methods of textual reading and comparative research in literary criticism, this paper also uses field research methods from the perspective of folklore and anthropology to conduct participatory observation and in-depth interviews on He Xiaomei’s life history, daily life, creative stories and the "literary homeland" ——the ancient city of Lijiang,to deeply connect the writer’s life experience and creative concept with his literary narrative. This paper breaks through the dilemma of literary criticism, which separates writers from their works, and the disadvantage of essentializing and homogenizing the ethnic identity of writers in minority literary criticism, obscuring the richness of writers and their creations with "ethnicity".Through He Xiaomei’s personal narrative and literary narrative, this paper finds that He Xiaomei, who has been influenced by modernity,"looks inward" at her own nation from a global perspective. Thus,in her works, tradition and modernity are connected, nationality and worldliness are open to dialogue, and the periphery and the center are not simply dichotomous, but have long been interpenetrating. In addition, both in the national historical themes and modern urban themes,He Xiaomei shows the reflection and reconstruction of modernity itself. |
