A Report On Book Reviews Translation Guided By Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion

This paper selects book reviews of The Translator—an international translation journal as the source text,which covers a wide range of topics,such as cultural identity,and memory research so as to help relevant scholars catch on the trends of translation research and various views to promote cross-cultural communication in translation.In source text,the translator finds that some works cited in the text and the translation of book titles need to reflect the main idea of the original text;Secondly,many terms in book reviews contain strong historical context and ideological differences,featuring in high degree of generality and conciseness.If translator does not consider the background knowledge,the translation will be obscure and difficult to understand.This paper will take George Steiner’s hermeneutic motion as the theoretical guidance of translation practice.The four stages of "trust,aggression,incorporation,compensation" proposed by Steiner refine the translation process.Translator inclines to follow the source text in the trust stage,and inclines to the target text after incorporation stage.Finally,compensation is needed to restore the balance.This study aims to investigate how to accurately render the abundant references in book review and how four-stage hermeneutic motion is applicable to the translation.further analyze the translation case from lexical and syntactic aspects in combination with different translation strategies.For terms,the author adopts literal translation and annotation to achieve foreignization to introduce foreign culture and academic ideas.In terms of sentence structure,the author adopts translation methods such as amplification and annotation to achieve domestication to improve the readability of book reviews.
