| This report reviews the process of the translation project of the Reflective Parenting(Chapter1 and 2),and at the same time analyze the problems and provides solutions. The source text is a popular science book about psychology that introduces the concept of reflective parenting for readers including young parents, scholars and counselors majoring in psychology. The source text is chiefly featured with three kinds of expressions, namely, narration of life situation, explanation of psychological phenomena and theory, and recommendation for parents.Based on the features of text and target reader, the “horizon of expectations”,a concept from Aesthetics of Reception theory by Hans Robert Jauss, integrates with translation practice to analyze the target reader’s expectation of aesthetics: empathy, explicitness, and conciseness. To meet the reader’s expectation of aesthetics, various methods and skills are applied in translation such as colloquial preference for empathy expectation, structural rearrangement and lexical preciseness for explicitness, and syntactic simplification and omission of redundant information for conciseness.According to the horizon of expectations, the target reader’s reaction is a key point as far as translator considers translation strategies and methods are concerned. The process of achieving three expectations is equal to the process of addressing the difference between English and Chinese. At the same time, this translation practice is helpful for the translator to realize the value of the horizon of expectation in translating the reader-centered text. |
